HANOI, Vietnam – China worked to calm nerves Tuesday among Asian neighbors jittery over its recent attempts to assert greater control over disputed waters, while its rival Washington stressed its national interest in keeping those seas free for commerce.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the U.S. has a stake in the growing number of disputes about ownership of Asian island chains and ship routes through waters China claims.

Are these little frictions real or are they actually little fictions? China claims it is not expansionist - it lies. I wonder whether this will come down to a tete-a-tete with the USA? If so, will the US feed nations like Japan, Viet Nam, Korea, etc. to China as part of some sort of package deal - momentary appeasements as China expands further?

If it isn't fiction, then I suspect the day will arrive when the US will have to shit or get off the pot WRT China. If there is no covert agreement between them, it will eventually be loggerheads.

Interesting times.
