I live in the bush and I went to Fairbanks this weekend and wow, just fucking wow. What emotional garbage 63 channels produced. I was sick to my stomach.

I also watch bill maher's real time (or what I could stomach) and noticed something very striking. The in-tolerance of the left. Most of the show was about homophobia. Now I agree with them about gay rights, but what they don't see is the homophobes rights. Yes people have a right to be gay, and you know what? people have a right not to like it. Being tolerant doesn't just include the "differences" you agree with, it's being tolerant of the ones you don't too. They also went on and on about the homophobes bullying while they spent 45 mins bulling the homophobes.

My last observation is Fairbanks Alaska is dead without government which is kind of funny seeing it's Joe Miller town.. From the state ran railroad, to the state funded collage, and the state ran military, to the state funded native corps and all the citizen subsidies, it's industry IS government. I asked a few businesses how it's been going, and guess what? they're doing great... even Jazzersize was packed and I saw several large construction jobs going.. However, that's a ghost town when government can't force us to pay for them to live their anymore.

I spent nearly a year in Europe and watched little TV over there- let alone American programming (aside from movies and reruns). When I came home I had a similar experience of being disappointed with the crap on US TV- and it is even worse today. Bruce Springsteen had a song around then called "57 Channels With Nothing On" and he was right. I still don't watch much TV.

As for the homophobia thing- that is much more on the right than on the left.

Okay. Time for another rambling theory from DG. (It's my thing)

I'll relate TV to dating. It has been statistically proven that people find it much harder to date in New York and London than in smaller cities and suburbs. Why? Because they have so many choices that they find it difficult to commit. What if someone better comes along? It disincentivizes sticking with one person (or show) long enough to get emotionally attached.

Personally, the number of shows I watched religiously fell off the map once I got cable, and then even more with internet. I think that's why it seems like nothing is on despite having a billion choices, channels targeting them specifically, and edgy cable programming.

Rambling theory number 2.
Liberals put great amounts of energy mocking people whom have different values than them because it is vital for their perceived standing amongst potential mates. Rejecting the values of middle america, wearing ugly hipster clothes, listening to shitty indy bands, and latching on to the latest "cult" favorite is a way to signal to others your level of sophistication without being sophisticated. Once people get married and have kids it's less important to signal their worth to potential mates and these habits die down. Consider the peacock, waving it's ridiculously impractical tail. :)

Last show I really got into and tried to make sure I watched every episode was Heroes. One problem I have (if you could call it that as far as not watching a lot of TV) is that my work schedule changes all the time- even from week to week. My days off are not always the same (or even together) and I can go from morning to night (off by 11pm) shifts so it is harder to get into watching anything in particular.

I disagree about the "choices" thing. I find it much easier to get into shows now because I can DVR them, or wait for them to be on torrents or DVD or wherever and catch up. I get to watch movies that used to be almost impossible to find, often in foreign languages without the terrible dubbing, and watch them whenever I want. The thing is, of course, there is a lot more of what an individual would consider garbage because it's not their cup of tea. I don't watch 99.99999% of shows and movies out there, I'd wager, and wouldn't really consider them entertaining. There's a significant portion that's utter crap, but someone must like it if it's still on the air.

I've got a TV but no cable and no antenna. I only use it to watch movies I rent. And that is a rare event. Next year when my son is 18, I'll get rid of the whole thing. And I ain't missin' a thing.

I am gross and perverted
I'm obsessed and deranged
I have existed for years
But very little has changed
I'm the tool of the government
and industry too
for I am destined to rule
and regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious
but you can't look away
I make you think I'm delicious
with the stuff that I say
I'm the best you can get
have you guessed me yet?
I'm the slime oozing out of your tv set

You will obey me while I lead you
and eat the garbage that I feed
until the day that we don't need you
don't go for help no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
it has been stuffed into my mold
and you will do as you are told
until the rights to you are sold

That's right folks, don't touch that dial!

Well I am the slime from your video
oozing along on your living room floor
I am the slime from your video
can't stop the slime people look at me go
