Rahm Emanuel could announce his candidacy for Chicago Mayor as soon as Friday of this week, but he may have to do it from a hotel room.

The tenant occupying Emanuel's home at 4228 N. Hermitage has refused to move out when the White House Chief of Staff returns, presumably, in October, the Sun-Times' Michael Sneed reports.

Robert Halpin, 59, and his wife Lori just re-signed a lease on the home that will last them through June 2011 -- just days before Mayor Daley announced his plans not to run. Halpin allegedly denied a request by Rahm to live in the basement until the lease ends.

The issue presents a residency problem for Emanuel. Election rules stipulate that a candidate prove residency for at least one year before the election.

Well Rahm is scum, and it's good to see him go, but he likely won't go very far and whoever his replacement is will be equally as bad. :(

That may be an exaggeration. During the first Gulf War he did work for the IDF as a civilian volunteer . They did not trust him with a weapon .

If true: does anyone think this will even shift policy by 0.001%? Cause I don't.

Senators and governors often leave office to work in the White House. Yet he's leaving it to merely RUN for mayor?!

Or he might get his ass kicked in the mayoral election. Thats the thing. It seems very presumptuous that he would give up his position for something so uncertain.

The people deserve better than him. He is a very presumptous type of personality . He gets in , he will play hardball to win .

Experts say Rahm Emanuel not a legal resident of city
MAYOR'S RACE | Courts may disagree

BY ABDON M. PALLASCH Political Reporter/apallasch@suntimes.com

The first question isn't: Can Rahm win? It's: Can Rahm run?

Sunday, Rahm Emanuel announced in a video posted on a website that he is preparing to run for mayor of Chicago. But two of Chicago's top election lawyers say the state's municipal code is crystal clear that a candidate for mayor must reside in the town for a year before the election.
