I've no doubt that's true for some people somewhere in this country. They aren't worth addressing. Pointing at "those people" over and over, though, helps distract from issues and gets people talking. Yeah, Maher makes a living from being an arrogant jackass. Is this new? More people pay attention to Maher than they do to the real problems going on all around them, the strings being pulled that dictate just about every factor in their lives... but not very many people pay attention to Maher. I don't think I've ever heard someone cite him as evidence of anything. He's certainly less relevant than Stewart, and still they're entertainers. At least you have to be a little tiny bit informed to "get" the humor.

Every one of the parties has "racist elements," so that's irrelevant. The party itself is less racist than several others I know. It has nothing to do with the party's membership, though. The traditionally "minority-heavy" Democratic party is arguably the most racist party out there, but it could be that they're willing to legislate based on race that makes it so.

People believe what they want to believe, in most cases, regardless of what even an overwhelming mountain of evidence may say to the contrary. I spend a fair amount of time observing people. I have a friend in NYC - she is a typical liberal New Yorker - believes in entitlement and government intervention in everything, especially "social programs" - but she rages about government interfering with her right to her herb. Completely, if unintentionally, clueless and hypocritical. I'm fond of her anyway, but learned not to get into any political discussion with her because there is no altering her mind. It is tightly clamped on to her ideas and that is that.

An old gf, now a club singer in NYC, Puerto Rican - a complete racist against white people (what in hell was she doing with ME, then? I've wondered that myself) saying really stupid shit like "white women can't sing", yet complains bitterly about horrid white racists doing the same sorts of things agains po' po' minorities - another hypocrite that believes government should interfere in the things she agrees with and not in the things she doesn't - like smoking a joint.

One of by best friend's wives s a textbook Jewish NYC liberal - highly educated, remarkably intelligent, a powerful debater, and a very sweet girl. You could parade evidence that would have God Hisownself nodding that you are right, yet she would stick to her position on certain issues such as guns and public education. There is NO argument you could present that would change her mind.

The point here is that those who are screaming believers are not going to be swayed no matter what spoken evidence is placed before them. An apocalypse might, but I'd rather not have that happen, thanks.

People believe what they want and there are those who will not alter the system of beliefs in which they have vested so much of their identities. To abandon even a single plank of that platform would be to threaten the very basis of their psyches and that, as we all know, most people will not allow.

The likes of Maher offer to such people just enough support that they are able to continue believing what they want even in the face of overwhelming contrary evidence. All such people need is the thinnest gossamer pretext to hang on and they will because they are married to the idea in question and will not relinquish it if there is any way to avoid it.

The anti-gun movement is a perfect example of this. They ignore reality in favor of their stunted ideas to which they are slavishly devoted, which in my opinion is a clear sign of mental disease. Healthy people, discovering an error in their thinking, make the necessary corrections and move on. The disturbed do the opposite - they entrench ever more deeply into their inner worlds, cementing their psychosis ever more solidly around them - almost like a shield protecting them from truth. It is very sad to see.

I am not talking about tea partiers, none of the people I talked about have been to a tea party event as far as I know, I haven't either. What I am saying, is that in the South particularly, a good chunk of people opposed to Obama hate him because he is black, that is a fact, and to ignore that would be naive.
