Of course the Poverty Rate is worse than 14.3% People are out of work, companies are making cut backs. People are taking pay-cuts, working less hours etc. And to top it all off, basics like Bread, Chicken, eggs etc. are going up in cost, and smaller in portions. People are not earning as much, they are paying more for basics, and getting less in return.

Don't worry. This is a problem that is easy to fix. The government will soon redefine the poverty line and bring that number back down to something reasonable.

What was the unemployment rate? Interesting how the poverty rate is higher than the unemployment rate...

Real unemployment is around 20 % , real poverty would be same . There are 6 people unemployed for each job available . During the great depression it was 5 to 1 .

lol, excellent point.

It just frustrates the hell out of me, the way the government screws with it's numbers.

Probably because a person working 20-25 hours for minimum wage counts as "employed."

Keep in mind, the poverty line in America is not poverty at all. I think something like, 70% of houdsholds in poverty have cable?

The vast majority have A/C, own their own car, and have all kinds of non-essentials.

A person working 1 hour per week at minimum wage counts as "employed."
