If all she does is "urge," then I see no problem with it. Of course, it won't stop there.

The First Lady should really have nothing much to do but wax poetic about social policies, host dinner parties, and generally be a hostess to all the folks who go waltzing in and out of the White House. She can meet with all the other dainty dignitaries around the world and exchange preferences on sofa fabrics, and exclaim about the weather. If there were a "First Gentleman," I'd expect his role to be about the same. She isn't in charge of any real, solid, important policy decisions. In this case, she's bemoaning the state of most traditional "restaurant" menus.

Okay, fine, sure; we'll get right on that. People who really want fresh, high-quality food wind up paying for it. People who want cheap food, wind up paying for it with their health and saving with their wallets. You are not going to get people to fork over $10-$15/plate at a "casual dining" restaurant for lettuce and sprouts... usually. The market just doesn't show these things to be prudent. Sure, they all have salads on their menus... but those are usually the worst things for you, if you keep up with nutrition information. The bottom line is that to make something cheap and tasty and worthy of going out to eat for, you're going to wind up with a lot of bad-for-you choices.

If people cared, they'd already be paying attention to the common sense signs that they are eating something unhealthy. Moreover, they'd just eat out less often. None of the fatty, nasty meals that Mrs. Obama is mad about are going to kill you all on their own. It's the culmination of these bad choices, made repeatedly, compounded by all the other bad choices that the person makes on a daily basis... those things lead to the health problems. If people cared, they'd re-evaluate their lives to see whether or not that second paycheck is doing any good. Some two-income households spend most of the lesser income on things like childcare, eating out, convenience foods, gas, a second vehicle, work clothes, and so on... do they get THAT far ahead? Or should the person making less consider working only PT, or not at all? Would that free up time to prepare food from scratch, and even engage the children in the process of doing so?

I doubt most people really care about those things, though, or they'd address them already. So she can "urge" all she wants... but my hunch is that, instead of addressing the root problems, we're going to wind up with more regulations instead.

The primary purpose of the First Lady should be to keep the President from ever feeling "constricted" so he never gets cranky and nukes Canada. The primary purpose of the First Gentleman would be to change the oil in the limo and secretly roll his eyes and say "yes dear" when the President started ragging on him about something.
