This is one of the big disadvantages of democracy. The entity responsible for all those things is not the whole American population, it's the federal government. But because we have some semblance of democracy, it creates the impression that we subjects of that government are responsible for what it does, when in truth the federal government is our enemy as much as it is an enemy of innocent Afghans, Pakistanis, Iraqis, and so on.

We'd be better insulated from blowback if the regime over us were a monarchy.
