I still think it'd be useful to have a per capita map like Patrick Ruffini's using all donor state data to date -- you'd only have to save the 50 states and counts, so it wouldn't be a huge data strain.

Hey chowda,

I made the google map last week showing some of the towns and cities where donations were made. ( http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dzzhbdq_5363ps3 )

I've been researching what's needed to make it automatic and real time and have a solution but not all the know how. I think it would be a really great addition to your site if you want to help make it a reality.

Basically, you parse out the 'city, state' from the LIBERTY feed and then there is a geocoder at:

http://geocoder.us/help/city_state_zip.shtml

The query...
http://geocoder.us/service/csv/geocode?city=san+francisco&state=ca

returns...
37.775, -122.418333333333, San Francisco, San Francisco, CA

Then you stick this data inside a .kml file which is xml format. The google map can show kml files.

Let me know if you're interested, I can provide the kml structure that works best.

ok... now that same page has a dynamic per capita donor map on it... so it's like the map Patrick Ruffini created, except it's dynamic and is a google map :)

Thanks guys! The support has been incredible.. and thanks to everyone who helped spread this around! It's really been linked quite a bit... keep it up!

@acstichter could you email me a sample kml file? I could probably do a map for the donors in the last 24 hours pretty easy... dan at ron paul graphs dot com
