It isn't China, like the T.V. has people believing. It is the private federal reserve bank that owns most of what you owe. And this is just the federal govenrment debt. Imagine how much the federal reserve is owed from PRIVATE lending (a much larger market).

The reality is that HALF of the money our union owes, owes it to a private bank that CREATES the money in the first place. So not only are they counterfieting paper bills and electronic digits which are redeemable in paper bills, the counterfieters are OWED money by the same people they are committing the crimes against - the American people.

As the popluation is dumbed down by a host of government programs, the public is less and less able to understand the above situation. This situation needs to be halted and soon!

So if we got rid of the federal reserve and printed our own money, we effectively cut government interest payments by 50%! Cool!

So, uh, how much does that come out to?

Actually it is not the Federal Reserve which is the biggest holder. The term is "Federal Reaserve and Intragovernmental Holdings".
As of September 2, 2010, the Fed had $786 billion in US debt (treasuries). http://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/h41/current/ Given that the debt today is an estimated $13.5 trillion, that means that they have 5.8% of total US debt. So where is the rest? Mostly in the Department of Social Security with other departments holding some in government pension funds and other retirement accounts. The "intragovernmental holdings" are seven and a half times what the Fed holds.

What are Intragovernmental Holdings?

Intragovernmental Holdings are Government Account Series securities held by Government trust funds, revolving funds, and special funds; and Federal Financing Bank securities. A small amount of marketable securities are held by government accounts.

The Fed buys their debt (treasuries) from dealers on the open market- not directly from the US government. China ($843 billion worth) and Japan ($803.6) each hold more US debt than the Federal Reserve does. http://www.ustreas.gov/tic/mfh.txt
