We are discussing the mosque in class today.(in 2 hours) I know the argument will be "sympathy" for those opposing religious freedom and private property. Any tips for countering?

Thanks!

There is a fairly lengthy thread about it someplace.

Bottom line, there is nothing in the Constitution that gives the federal government the authority to involve themselves in this issue. It is unconstitutional for them to do so. Those who would encourage the government to go outside their constitutional bounds to involve themselves in this issue, need to look no further than in the mirror, when they are upset about the growth in the size and scope of government.

The federal government's primarily function is to protect the life and liberty of all Americans. That includes those of the Muslim faith. The issue also involves private property rights (http://www.thefreemanonline.org/columns/the-property-basis-of-rights/), which we know are the basis of every single one of our liberties. It is solely the business of the property owner to decide who leases his property. It most certainly is not the government's, or anyone else for that matter.

If people refuse to stand up for the rights of people who don't look exactly like them or have the same exact faith, what are they going to do when someone comes after their own liberty?

Note: And it is my personal opinion, and only that, that those people who are rightly or wrongly concerned about the incompatibility of Christianity with the Muslim faith and the battle written about in the Bible, the way to deal with it would be by limiting immigration from those countries. Once people are citizens, they are every bit as American as anyone else and their rights must be respected. (Bring on the flame war) heh

Most people who are against it have stated that they don't want the government to stop it...just that it "shouldn't happen".

They're fine to hold those beliefs. Just like someone might not like that there are strip clubs or liquor stores in their town.

Freedom to do what you want requires tolerance of others to do what they want (as long as they don't interfere with your right to be free).

Some anti- American Islamic groups see the contriversy as a great recruiting tool to show that Americans hate Islam. Some US groups claim that Islam is intollerant- yet are intollerant themselves. Both are in the minority but are making a lot of noise over it. There is already another mosque four blocks from the area (the new center would be two blocks away), has been there for years, and has had no problems so far.
