Ron Paul on Congressman Larry McDonald (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_McDonald), the President of the John Birch Society (http://www.jbs.org/) (at the time).

Ron Paul went to Congressman Larry McDonald for advice on running for Congress. McDonald said, "Run in the party you think you can win because political parties are irrelevant." This made Ron Paul become a Republican.

I'm pretty sure he ran as republican because they always won in his district. Pretty sure I remember him saying that on many occasions.

Hm. Thanks -- this is a useful piece of info to distance Ron Paul from the actions of the Republican Party if someone has a closed-minded hatred of everyone in the party.
