Incidentally, a momma bear will often let her cubs die and save herself if conditions get bad. It's a natural reaction, since she can breed again and the cubs would die without a mother. This also happens in cases of a mother bear having more babies than she can handle.

I have no idea why the image of a "Momma Grizzly" is seen as such a positive.
