PORT LAVACA - Nearly 70 years have passed since 91-year-old Roland Cain served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

For about two-and-a-half years, he was stationed in several European countries including Germany and France before exiting the military with honor and prestigious recognition.

Only, the recognitions that were due Cain - The European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medal with one silver bar; The World War II Victory medal; The Good Conduct medal, and The Marksman Badge with rifle bar -- never came.

Enter U.S. Rep. Ron Paul.

During a Republican Party fundraiser at the Port Lavaca Heritage Center on Sunday afternoon, the congressman surprised Cain with four neatly framed service medals, and an American flag that had been symbolically flown over the nation's capital.

"It is with great pleasure I present these medals to Roland Cain, which are so long overdue," Paul said.

Wide-eyed and thankful, Cain accepted the gifts and shook Paul's hand while a room of about 150 onlookers stood in ovation.

"It was wonderful to be honored," Cain said.

Paul explained that many former World War II servicemen qualified for medals and never received them after the war.

"At that time, people were just so ready to go home after the war they never followed up on receiving their medals," Paul said. "It was the convenience of my schedule that allowed me to do it."

Russell Cain, Calhoun County's sitting Republican Party Chairman and Roland Cain's son, was responsible for the presentation at Sunday's fundraiser, contacting Paul's office weeks ago to request the favor.

"I'm elated Congressman Paul was able to do it," Russell Cain said. "It was a great honor for him to honor our father and I very much appreciate it."

When asked what he's finally going to do with his long-delayed honors, Cain said laughing, "I'm going to keep them."

That's awesome. I wonder how many WW2 veterans never received their medals and recognition..

Sorry about that, Knightskye. I usually try to search first.

I think you read it wrong. He misspelled 'not', but he said 'You have a lot of free time when you're not behind closed doors, scheming against the American people'. Which I saw as RP's lack of backroom wheeling and dealing, being an honest politician, giving him more free time. I don't see any insult.

He worded it wrong and saw it as negative.

RM19 is probably correct, though I don't blame Meatwasp for reading it wrong. I absolutely had no idea what it said until I got to RM19's post :p

When I nitpick about spelling and grammar, some of you mock me, but communication is an important thing :D

Same, same.

Thank you. I have been moving into a new house for days and I am exhausted. This is why my post count is only a thousand after three years. Because I'm afraid of the word/context nazi's.

Kludge you don't need a sarcasm tag. I know and thank you, see reply above.

My point is that the job of congress shouldn't be that demanding if done within the context of the Constitution and in it's original intent. But the fact of the matter is that it has become a disaster. RP has time to go out of his way to honor this man when the rest of the government forgot about him because they spend all their time passing socialist policy and lining their pockets.

If anybody has a hard time interpreting what I have just written please send complaints to the moderator and have me banned. Because with all my anti liberty sentiment we can't be poisoning the water with my filth.

Calm. Down.

If you can't see how your original post was garbled, then no one can help you. It really didn't read like much of anything to me. You made more than one error in it, and the intent was lost. RM19's ability to read it fixed that for most of us.

We all make some errors posting from time to time.

As to your now-understood point, I agree to a certain extent. Of course, Congressmen and Presidents have an awesome vacation plan that allows for an awful lot of schmoozing to go on during their visits "home." Most of them are out there from time to time these days, popping up at events and hammering home their idiotic talking points. Dr. Paul sees fit to do this. He's an excellent human being, and makes everyone feel singularly important when he talks to them; that has to be my favorite attribute, even if it's not really one you get until you meet him in person. I bet that veteran got to feel that way, too, which is just a bonus after the long wait for his promised honors.

I am sure, however, that Dr. Paul has a shitload of extra time because, as you hinted, he isn't entertaining lobbyists and people who mean us ill. I'm guessing most of them don't even darken his doorway, since they don't "need" his vote to pass some dastardly law and know they can't count on his support anyhow. :D

In my military career I only got handed one medal, the rest I just put on and had to hand write into my service record. But most of those medals and ribbons no one cares about. The only one I got a certificate and ceremony for, was also the only one they asked for proof in my record. It's funny now cause I'm looking at my ribbons and thinking I still need to update a couple things.

I do see exactly what your point is. But when a dude hits ninety-one, he finds that his grandchildren are liable to feel differently about the odd theater ribbon or two...

Well I mean the government doesn't care. I regard the value of my medals almost in reverse, the military considers command level awards, and awards for being a tool more important that personal accomplishment medals. For example my Expert Marksman Pistol medal is the lowest medal/ribbon in the military, but I'm proud of it, on the other hand "National Defense" medal is one of the higher medals yet they give it to anyone in the military for doing absolutely nothing beyond being in the military during a time of war.

You're pretty good if you can hit something with a pistol! If I have to use my pistol it means the bad guy has ended up between me and my rifle.

I scored a 140ish for Pistol Marksmanship, but I never got the expert ribbon device because it was on my second time shooting. Isn't that one of the dumbest things you have ever heard?

True , the fact that you would have a sidearm out probably means you are having a pretty bad day .
