I'm having a debate with someone about socialism vs freedom and the person has brought up quite a good point...

Here's the argument:

"In the UK, 70% of the land is owned by 6,000 people and has done since 1066. How does more freedom help with this?"

I don't know if these numbers are correct but I'd rather not ask for a reference until I am sure it could be faulty. However, it's a tricky one to debate again.

So what about these people that have inherited this land back from the feudal times and now own huge pieces of it. I know these people can't be forced to part with it and shouldn't be forced to sell it. So what can competition do to even up this situation?

How has socialism of which the UK is not lacking, helped with the situation?

That land was acquired and accumulated through government force, how is more government force going to help? More government force is only going to concentrate the land in even fewer hands.

Although I have always though that some kind of investigation on how the land was acquired and (if the land was acquired with government help) an initial confiscation and distribution of some of the land is a good idea, to help create a start.
