Found out from this video: http://thebubble.msn.com/video/?id=724ab037-d0a9-f8d7-b3bc-69bc2b0c8d12
explaining "hide your wife, hide your children" is on the leading list. the host seems to be asking people to contribute or this is our fate.

The wakeup song has been a part of the space program since the days of the Apollo missions, and now NASA is giving you two chances to be a part of this history! We need your help selecting wakeup songs to be played during the final missions of the Space Shuttle Program!

we should get an aimee allen on there.
not sure if we can submit it, or if she needs to submit it.
you have to submit your own material, so i think we'd need to get in touch with aimee so that she could submit the song.

I haven't read anywhere how long these missions will be, but it could be up to a week each, so they'd need around 12 songs.
personally, i think they should keep using the shuttle. the orion is costing too much.

I mean. if the current fleet is getting too old, make new shuttles.
we have an entire system already in place for shuttle launches.

or they could start different classes of space vessels by purpose.
shuttles could be used for earth orbit missions.

orion could be used for solar system exploration by manned mission.

anyone know how to get in touch with aimee allen?
we could easily get her song in the top 10.
she would only need 5000 online votes to get there.

Voted for Magic Carpet Ride.

I haven't voted yet, but most of those songs have already been used as wake-up songs in the past.

edit: actually, all the songs on the list are there because they were used on previous missions. there are no addition submissions listed yet.

Different types of spacecraft are already used for different purposes. Shuttles are not going to fly to the moon or to Mars or anywhere else; they are already exclusively earth orbit craft. The big advantage to shuttles is that they are manned workhorses. They can carry a lot of cargo, and they can glide back to earth safely with the crew inside. The alternatives have never been good, as they are usually the segmented rockets which either have to be unmanned, or in the case of lunar missions are dangerous and have to land in the sea anyhow. At this point, a redesign would be woefully necessary for a lunar or Martian mission, and since the Government would probably still be involved in such things it would likely be ridiculously expensive and take forever to construct and implement.

The launchpads and other peripherals can still be used to launch rockets into space, and any future rockets/craft that are designed could use them.

which begs the question, when they retire the shuttle, how do they plan to maintain earth orbit satelites and missions?

Or supply the Space Station (you'll notice a lot of other nations already hitch rides aboard the Shuttle for that purpose). Some other nation will step up, I guess? It's all kind of hokey to me.
