Gerson is the guy who was most responsible for Bush's "compassionate conservatism" with faith based initiatives and stuff. Before that he was involved in helping push the same basic ideas as a staffer for the senator who was probably their biggest champion before Bush, and who's now returning to the Senate after defeating Hostettler in Indiana, Dan Coats.

If anything is toxic to the GOP (at least if we have any hopes for the GOP being part of the solution), it's compassionate conservatism.
