Peter had said at the time of the Kick ad release that he didn't want to do anything to harm Linda for the general election in case she won the primary. The Kick ad filled that bill. Although it would alert conservatives to her unworthiness in the primary it may have convinced liberals that she wasn't so bad after all seeing as how she was being denounced as a liberal.
Further, many women who have been offended by male chauvinism would cheer her apparent ability and willingness to deal appropriately with whatever rotten men might stand in her way. The ad may have cut into her primary vote but boosted her in the general.
