DARIEN -- Peter Schiff extols the virtues of precious metals and Asian stocks to a pair of businessmen at the Sugar Bowl Luncheonette, a breakfast institution caddy corner from the former home of his brokerage firm.

His words sound more like they belong on the pages of a prospectus -- the ones that come in the mail when you open an IRA -- than political talking points.

"Get out of the dollar. That's what I say," Schiff, 47, says after one of the patrons, both of whom identify themselves as undecided Republican primary voters, solicits investment advice. Neither one admits to knowing much about Schiff the Senate candidate, a microcosm of the tall task that the pollsters say lies ahead in Tuesday's primary for the financial talking head and money manager from Weston against heavily favored wrestling promoter Linda McMahon and off-again, on-again candidate Rob Simmons.

"Had you guys heard about me?" asks Schiff of a trio of handlers passing out leaflets to the patrons.
