The demand for online vote results crashed a state computer system Thursday night, shutting down Tennessee Secretary of Statehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.tennessean.com/article/20100806/NEWS02/100806004/Hargett+%E2%80%98really+sick%E2%80%99+about+electi on+reporting+failure#) Tre Hargett’s ability to count and post statewide vote totals and slowed the reporting of election results from Tennessee’s 95 counties.

Just before 10 p.m., Hargett’s spokesman issued an apology statement to the public saying the Secretary of State and his Division of Electionshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.tennessean.com/article/20100806/NEWS02/100806004/Hargett+%E2%80%98really+sick%E2%80%99+about+electi on+reporting+failure#) had lost the ability to post results. He later said the new system was put in place with “good intentions” but it didn’t work out.

“Due to the unprecedented volume of traffic on our web site, our servers have crashed," said spokesman Blake Fontenay. "As a result, we will not be able to continue to offer updates on election results throughout the evening. This service was something new that we tried this year - and we apologize for the inconvenience. When we receive the final results, we will post them online in a PDF format, as we have in years past."

The new reporting system was supposed to make collecting and posting vote totals from the state’s 95 county election commissions more efficient (http://www.tennessean.com/article/20100806/NEWS02/100806004/Hargett+%E2%80%98really+sick%E2%80%99+about+electi on+reporting+failure#) and easier for the public to track results. In tests earlier this week, everything worked fine and backup servers were in place, Fontenay said.

Yet, Thursday was a different story. There were signs of trouble earlier in the day as the state’s entire computer system crashed for a period, foreshadowing later troubles. By the time polls closed at 7 p.m. in Nashville, it was clear there were problems with the Secretary of State’s website.

It was hit-or-miss trying to click on the election results page, with visitors often receiving an error message. Fontenay said the heavy traffic of visitors coming to the site had also shutdown the ability of the local election commissions to upload results to the state’s central system.

The office had to improvise and started receiving faxes and emails from the local commissions. Some three hours after the polls closed, Fontenay said the new reporting system had been scrapped, and local officials were sending in results through email and faxes.

EPIC GOVERNMENT FAILURE!

And yet they want us to trust the same government to run our schools? HA!

I hear ya Matt. The TN site went down about 3 minutes after the polls closed. and ALL day long on state radio stations i heard "The site went down earlier this morning, but dont worry, they said it will be up tonight, and they also have a BACKUP PLAN!"

Well phooey on that because the backup plan even failed. I mean the servers actually crashed! If you tried loading the page, you got "404 not found" issues, meaning that some state server, somewhere, got so overwhelmed that the OS itself was corrupted and files lost, or something to that effect.

I was refreshing Politico and NewsChannel5.com all night to find out. ugh.

I was angry when I heard the "moderate" or "centrist" (as described by Politico) won in the gubernatorial race over the guy who talked about secession.

The guy who said that was full of it, Zach Wamp. He is a liar who voted for the bailouts.

Well, he still talked about it. Since I didn't here you or anyone else talking about anyone in the race, I assumed they were all neocon trash, but voting for Wamp would have made a statement that secession is on the table, and isn't just a wacky "Lost Cause" aficionado idea, either.

So, when it comes to providing facts, the government utilizes a Commodore 64 and a cradle modem. When it comes to spewing propaganda, however, no Cray is fast enough...

Well, he still talked about it. Not really, it was kind of a slip of the tongue sort of thing. He is against it and is part of the problem of DC largess.

The message sent would be that voting for the bailout was ok.

It was probably a 386 running on a 14.4 dial up that cost 100,000 dollars.
