DENVER - Colorado's Republican candidates for Senate are attacking each other over immigration in radio ads during the last week of voting in their primary.

The latest volley in the bitter primary started Wednesday, when Jane Norton released a 60-second radio ad based on comments Ken Buck made to USA Today in a July 21 story.

In an interview Wednesday, Norton said, "In the USA Today story, (Buck) said he would support amnesty and a touchback law for illegals."

However, the word "amnesty" does not appear in the USA Today story. The story paraphrases Buck, and the comments do not differ from the immigration policy he laid out for this newspaper in June.

Buck plans to hit back with his own radio ad on immigration today, said his spokesman, Owen Loftus.

"She flat-out lies," Loftus said of Norton. "She doesn't use quotes because she doesn't have quotes."

Both Buck and Norton have said they would not seek to deport the estimated 12 million people who immigrated to the United States illegally. And both say the first priority is to secure the border and then establish a program for legal, temporary workers, who would have to apply for work permits from their home countries.

Buck has said the work permits should be granted in the space of only a few weeks - something Norton ridiculed as a "touchback" law to enable a quick return of illegal immigrants.

Buck outlined his plan in a June interview with the Herald.

"They can either return to their country of origin and go through that process and get back here in a week or two to work maybe for the same employer, or they risk deportation. But we can't grant amnesty, and we can't punish the people that have done it the right way. The people who are here illegally have got to go to the back of the line and work through the system," Buck said.
