Some kind of private analysis company that verifies and approves food might help. Of course those who knowingly poison people should suffer the maximum penalty that a society offers.

So, a UL-type company that guarantees the ingredients are okay? Great. Where do I chip in?

What's the answer when one of the largest manufacturers of stuff in the world doesn't seem to have any standard when it comes to their companies' products?

Don't buy their stuff? What do I win?

Simple: don't buy their products. If you feel uneasy about a particular product, you are at liberty to purchase from a different producer. In the case of dog food, get some higher-end stuff from a brand you do trust.

At the margin, the company(ies) in China will realize that a lack of a quality standard is hurting their business, and so they will take appropriate measures to do so.

Problem solved, though it takes time.

Nothing. You lost, I am the one who gets the prize. I expect fully paid vacation to Hawaii for everyone I feel like inviting.

In addition to "don't buy their stuff" you could also "make your own."

In theory, you should be perfectly able to research dog food, and make your own competing brand in the USA. It probably will not be as cheap, even in a perfect world, because you wouldn't be using "garbage" ingredients (or else why even bother getting into the business as described in the hypothetical?). You could market your brand as a healthy, safe, and delicious product, and you could get lots and lots of vets on board to recommend your product to their clients based on its actual virtues. This is not to be confused with how the pharmaceutical industry works now, wining and dining and so on, but if vets were as angry as the OP about the nature of the Chinese dog food, they would be quick to endorse an alternative.

You could also make your own dog food at home.

You might be able to find an old vintage zenith at a garage sale this time of year.

You said that it was made in China and that it was crap. Just because it is made in China doesn't make it crap. I purchase many quality products from China. I also purchase garbage made in the USA. I thought you were specifically referring to buying garbage, not necessarily Chinese stuff in general. I would suggest rather than stop buying Chinese products and calling all of their stuff garbage, you stop acting xenophobic when it comes to economic exchange.

Your biggest problem will be with electronics, but I find it highly suspicious you'd complain about the quality of something like a cellphone, computer, or mp3 player. What are you comparing them to?

You can make your own toothpaste.

You can live without the other things, with the probable exception of the refrigerator which has become a standard part of daily life.

"Made in the USA" or "Made Not-in-China" isn't going to help you. While something might not be "made" in a particular place, it might be assembled there. The parts originate in one nation, are assembled in another, and the manuals and other paperwork are brought in from yet another site.

However, speaking in an ideal world, it would be easier to compete and to be able to market your "Made in the USA" refrigerators. Most refrigerators aren't really that amazing, anyhow; the design is basic and each company just tweaks things and reconfigures the space. Without all the barriers to starting up a company, I wouldn't be shocked to see a competitive non-Chinese model in stores quite quickly.

As far as toothpaste, I'm a big fan of the toothpaste: "spry" made by XLear, Inc. Made in the US.

Repeal anti-competitive labor laws that make the price of manufacturing so costly here in the United States.

Good question.

So you change brands after your dog dies? That sucks. Changing the brand of baby food after the fact would be painful too. Not a lot you can do, because everything is after the fact. Some kind of private analysis company that verifies and approves food might help. Of course those who knowingly poison people should suffer the maximum penalty that a society offers.

That was the thread title, which also says "and other things." But yes, thank you for the dog food suggestion.

Right, I'm just worried about hazardous materials that might be in the products I'm using.

What the heck, I like a little challenge...

Cell phonePhones are tricky because their parts come from all over the place. You can find Nokia phones made in the USA and batteries made in Japan. China actually isn't quite as big a player in our cell phone manufacturing abroad as Japan is, though.

ComputerActually the easiest of the bunch, since most computers are actually made in Taiwan.

TelevisionMagnavox, Toshiba, and Panasonic all manufacture TV's in the USA.

Refrigerator
MicrowaveWhirlpool notoriously makes refrigerators made in USA (http://www.whirlpool.com/catalog/category.jsp?categoryId=96) and microwaves made in USA (http://www.whirlpool.com/catalog/product.jsp?src=Search&categoryId=90&productId=1772)

ToothpasteTom's of Maine (http://www.tomsofmaine.com/home) is really good quality natural stuff made in the USA.

Mp3 playerMade in Korea (http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=cowon+D2&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=17459783263847116655&ei=bPdYTKS8DYL0tgOLocjjCw&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CCUQ8wIwAQ#)

SilverwareMade in USA (http://www.radamfg.com/)

CamerasMade in Japan (http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=Canon+PowerShot+SD1100IS&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=10246938552994005032&ei=8P1YTKKiMo24sQPRyP31CQ&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CDgQ8wIwAQ#)

Not as hard as it seems, to be honest. But you have to consider that China is a little better at technology products than they are dog food products. It's not like they make everything "Made in China" from the same factory. Basing a product solely on where it's made isn't the smoothest move.

My sister-in-law just went to her dad's farm and slaughtered about 20 chickens for her dog's food supply.

That's certainly made in America.

The dog food I buy is made in a plant about a half-hour away from here...though I'm sure my doggie would prefer the dead chickens, I'm not going there...yet.

Just ban any thing and every thing produce in China, and ban American companys from owning plants in China and other nations, and revoke their busness license for hiring illegal aliens.

I feed my pets high quality meat.
