BREAKING Lieberman absence ensures failure for DISCLOSE Act

Sen. Joseph Lieberman, Connecticut Independent, will not be present Tuesday for the vote on the DISCLOSE Act, a spokeswoman told the Daily Caller, virtually ensuring that the bill will not pass.

Lieberman is attending a funeral service and will not be in Washington, spokeswoman Erika Masonhall said.

The odds of passage for DISCLOSE were already low, with all Republicans but one — Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine — certain to vote against it. But there was still hope for some on the left that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, would be able to pull together the votes.

But Lieberman’s absence means that even if Snowe were to vote for the bill, Reid would still be one vote short.

In the House, lawmakers are debating the $59 billion supplemental bill for the war in Afghanistan. The bill is likely to pass, but House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey, Wisconsin Democrat, has said he will vote against it out of anger that $10 billion for education funding had been stripped from the legislation.

Republicans, however, said they planned to give their full support.

“We expect a very strong vote in support of this supplemental,” said House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, Virginia Republican. “We are going to support this bill.”

Yep - vote failed.

And since Scott Brown and Olympia Snowe also voted no, it looks like it won't be brought back for a vote for a while.

Good, I am relieved to see the bill voted down. But that just might mean the disclose act wil be snuck through another omnibus bill.

Eehhhh.... I dunno.

I suppose some neocons can and will hide behind some attack ads, but the Disclose Act bill also had some very anti-freedom aspects to it, especially for smaller but politically active groups like Campaign for Liberty and Gun Owners of America.

The NRA initially opposed it, but then decided the whole thing was okay - AFTER a special rule exempting them was added...

Overall, I think it's a win that the thing failed.

I thought unions were exempt from this bill? The Washington Post is reporting otherwise.

Proponents of the bill assert that it will help to rein in political control at the hands of lobbyists and special interest groups, but with exemptions made for large powerful groups like the National Rifle Association and labor unions, it seems unlikely that the bill would achieve that stated goal.

In fact, prior to a deal struck between the NRA (http://www.thenewamerican.com/index.php/usnews/politics/3807-nra-trades-first-amendment-rights-for-second-amendment-rights) and Congress whereby the NRA agreed not to fight the legislation if it were exempted from the legislation, it seemed as if the act was doomed.

I think it could still be revived.

Reid voted no, which is a procedural move to allow him to revive the bill if he pleases.

When the financial "reform" bill was rejected, Reid voted similarly and had it debated again a few days later.

I hope I'm wrong but we'll know in the next few days.

How did Russ Feingold and Ron Wyden vote?

I'm sure Russ voted for the bill. He was right there with Schumer in endorsing the bill.
