Hey guys going out tonight to hang some banners, just looking for some quick tips, I pretty much got the run down on everything. We probably going to hang most of them on highway overpasses, were using the plasic ties and fish line. Also any tips on what to do with overpasses without fences that just have poles? Just let it hang? Ok thanks

Be very careful.
If those fall off the overpasses, that's trouble.

none in this area You can find some! I didn't think we had any in/near Hazleton either, but we found a few while driving around putting up banners and signs.

Even fences around old buildings, at intersections, anywhere you can find one that isn't an individual's private property. (None on people's houses or backyard fences!)

And you can get magnets (like the ones used in old hard drives... forget what they're called) that can be used to put banners on metal overpass bridges. There's a thread on here with a diagram somewhere, but searh is down at the moment.

Oh, and between the posts of highway signs that have 2 poles. You know.. like the big blue "rest area ahead" ones and the "welcome to X" or "X 10 miles" signs. You can tie a banner between the posts, just make sure you secure it really well - all 4 corners.

And HAVE FUN! It was such a rush doing our first overpass. The banner nearly flew right out of my hands when a truk drove past. It was a surprisingly good time.

Get pictures/video if you can!

Dont know if I'd trust fish line, stick with Zip Ties or rope.

Yeah... fishing line would be more likely to tear through the plastic/tyvek, and is more susceptible to breakage. Rope ftw! Or if you mean a thicker fishing twine, that'd be fine. But not that thin/clear line.

Makes some slices (or holes) in the tyvec (or whatever you're using for material) so that the wind will pass through the sign.

1. Make 2'' or 3'' cuts in the shape of a V to let wind pass through. It'll put less stress on the materials holding it up.
2. Do not use fishing line as it is easily broken and we don't want anything bad to happen.
3. Get a boy scout to tie the knots.

With tyvec it's best to fold the material over itself (about an inch) and then poke a hole through the two layers, and then fasten it with a plastic wire tie or two through each hole. Fasten the banner at at least six different points.

Agreed. We usually go about 2 inhes from the edge, further if possible.

And definitely don't put grommets right on the edge. We bought a few banners on ebay months ago, with grommets (through 3 layers) on the very edge... less than an inch from the sides. Ripped through and was down within one day. :(

I recommend never hanging banners on overpasses/bridges unless you do so behind a fence. It's just not worth the risk and you don't want to be perceived as disregarding people's safety.

If you can do it safely, no problemo. Get the huge ass super magnets, tie a rope to the banner to lower it, push the magnets on, cut the rope, and you're golden.

Things went great tonight, some pictures coming soon, also a tip if your worried about wind, just slash some holes in the middle of the banner. We got the Deleware water gap covered, both sides, right by the toll and the board with New Jersey/ Pennsylvania. 100,000 people minimum easily every day!!!!!!!!!!

If you are going to use zipties, it will help to reinforce the tyvek with several layers of duct tape before making holes for the zipties....for safety sake.

I saw one great idea on a RP sign video where they took a hammer strapped to a long pole and used another long pole to put the signs up really high and they hammered them into wooden telephone polls so high up that nobody could remove them without a ladder.
