Meg Whitman, the RINO for California Governor is making it clear what side she is on in the immigration and border control debate. She is shamelessly pandering for votes from Spanish speaking residents who might oppose immigration limits and border control. This is good news for Chelene Nightingale, the only candidate for Governor who supports the Arizona law.

Whitman's new billboards in Spanish: I'm against Prop 187, AZ law

A reader just sent us evidence of GOP guv candidate Meg Whitman's latest outreach to Latino voters: A Spanish-language billboard saying she (would have) opposed Proposition 187 and opposes the controversial Arizona immigration law.

The billboard, spotted on Highway 99 about 2 miles north of Earlimart in Tulare County, says:

"NO a la Proposicion 187 y NO a la Ley de Arizona -- Meg Whitman."

Whitman, Minority of Californians Against Arizona Law
Moderating stance on immigration meant to appeal to state's latinos

Meg Whitman stance on the Arizona immigration law may woo latino voters, but might also lose her support among party faithful.

Republican gubernatorial nominee and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman might have just picked the wrong side in the immigration fight, at least from a purely political standpoint.

Whitman, who appointed former governor and Prop. 187 bogeyman Pete Wilson as her campaign chairman and largely refused to talk to newspapers during the primary, took to the pages of bilingual broadsheets in Southern California to say that she does not support an Arizona-style state law to crack down o illegal immigration, indeed comparing her stance to that of her Democratic rival, Attorney General Jerry Brown.

On the one hand, it sets Whitman apartment from the state and national Republican party, and runs counter to moves made by senate candidates John McCain in Arizona and Carly Fiorina here in California.

It's also counter to recent polls conducted in the state, with one from CBS News that found 57 percent of Californians supporting the Arizona Law, and a Field Poll showing support beating opposition 49 to 45 percent, respectively.

She's not alone in the party, at least, with Repbublican Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado also opposing the Arizona law. She does differ with Maldonado in terms of education for undocumented immigrants, however, promising not to allow them access to the state's public college and universities.

Brown also opposes the Arizona Law, but supports access to higher education by immigrants and a path to citizenship for those already living, working and paying taxes in the state.

The move is part of a larger effort by the Whitman campaign to court latino voters, 71 percent of whom oppose Arizona's law. And while there's concern among GOP pundits she'll alienate her right wing base in the state, the bigger concern among the GOP is that she'll alienate right-leaning independents, as well.

How can any reasonable person oppose Prop 187? It just prevents illegals from receiving favors from the government.

This may actually hurt Meg Whitman. :)

No doubt. Many people have a choice between voting for the lesser of two evils (Brown or Whitman), or voting on principles. Whitman's stand on this issue may push a lot of people over to the principled side. People also need to remember how often they vote for the lesser of two evils and still get the more evil. They lose both their principles and the election...

I think GOP voters will choose to stay home.

Meg Whitman is pretty much Arnie's third term. She'll restrict more guns, subsidize illegals, sign more Global Warming emission laws. She's a danger to liberty, as well as that other San Fran. clown - Jerry Brown.

Flip-flopping since the Primary? No surprise here. Just a little Primary fib. In her official handouts she called for increased immigration into California by expanding the H1-B and L1 programs for high-tech workers. Just what we need, when Silicon Valley is already hit hard with unemployment. Her stance on illegal immigration is no surprise.

What else would you expect from a CEO and Goldman Sachs Board member?

She'll wait until Real ID comes out before she makes any decisions...

Meg Whitman backs away from immigration inspection plan

By Susan Ferriss
The Sacramento Bee

Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman is backing away from a key immigration proposal she advanced in this spring's competitive GOP primary after farmers and other business interests expressed displeasure with her idea.

As she campaigned this spring, Whitman said she would send state and local officials into California businesses to look for illegal immigrants — her own version of federal immigration workplace inspections.

But her campaign now says she would wait to act until the federal government institutes a "fail-safe" way for employers to verify workers' status — an effort that has been more than a decade in the making.
