RON PAUL WINS MIDDLE GEORGIA STRAW POLL
MACON, Georgia, October 15, 2007 Ron Paul was declared the winner today of the Middle Georgia GOP Presidential Straw Poll, held over the past week at the Georgia National Fair in Perry, Georgia. Paul received 84 votes, fifty-five percent of the 152 votes cast. Former Senator Fred Thompson came in second with 32 votes, and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani received 16 votes to place third in the poll.
The straw poll was hosted by the Macon Ron Paul 2008 MeetUp group in conjunction with their booth for the ten-term Congressman from Texas. Paul recently announced that he had raised $5.1 million in the third quarter for his presidential bid. No other presidential candidate had a booth at the fair.
Other Republican candidates received votes in the poll. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee was the fourth place finisher with five votes. Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney tied for fifth place with four votes each. Arizona Senator John McCain took sixth place with three votes, and Kansas Senator Sam Brownback and California Congressman Duncan Hunter both had two votes to tie for seventh place. Voting was conducted during regular fair hours from October 4th through the 14th and was open to anyone eligible to vote in the November 2008 election.
