"We shall never be able to gain a hearing from the millions who have been brainwashed by the libertarian nonsense and its laissez-faire conservative accompaniments until we find a dramatic way to drive home the point that although there is great room -- in effect, urgent need -- to reform our government, nobody really wants to live without most of the services it does provide. And if a bunch of libertarians want to sign the contract and move to some mountaintop and take care of each other, so be it. Just remind them not to call 911 in an emergency."

No, the services are provided, just by free individuals, not the government.

They say libertarianism is simple, but left-liberals must be the dumbest people in the world, cause they can't understand it.

It's not about libertarianism, it's about individualism vs. collectivism. Straight. Up.

I often wonder if liberals understand what the term "non sequitur" means.

Hey, if we could go live somewhere in a libertarian society without fear of reprisal by the feds, I'm all for it.

We had private fire houses in the 19th century. They used to sabotage each other's equipment and start fires to drum up business.

Was this really that common? Debunk?

This is why I never use the term libertarian.. its just perpetuates partisan politics.

Only in the movies, like Gangs of New York.

What rubbish. The State has a monopoly on all of those services, by denying anyone from using its own monopolies the State would effectively be denying them from using ANY service.

And, really? A passport is a 'service'? How am I serviced by being forced to seek permission for what I could freely do otherwise, travel? I would imagine he thinks a 'free speech zone' permit is a service as well.

Jesus, our campuses are producing alot of shitheads.

I'd sign that contract with a few changes. There are obviously some government services that I cannot avoid using due to the lack of free market options, such as driving on government roads or the previously mentioned passport. In which case, the government can bill me at a reasonable rate on a per use basis. Just like any other business.

Not that I know of. An article wont cure their ignorance, anyhow.

Post #11 is a pretty good response, there have been a few others.

Explain that the reason why private enterprise doesn't provide a lot of the services government provides is because the government simply doesn't allow it, or because people wouldn't use them because they are already forced to pay taxes for those services so they receive them 'free'. Roads are paid for with gas tax, so you should be able to use the road since you would pay a gas tax.

You could send them this link:

I had one of my relatively statist friends read that and it blew his mind.

Actually, I'd be happy to make the compromise.

No federal income taxes or FICA for me or my employer and I'll agree not to use Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid for the rest of my life. The corporate taxes are ~50% of the federal revenue, so that should cover defense and all the other federal projects...
