" Sen. Jim DeMint (S.C.) said Tuesday that he is open to running for a spot on the Senate Republican leadership team.

One of the Senate's most outspoken conservatives, DeMint has broken with his party's leadership in a number of Senate primaries. He left open the possibility of an attempt to join the ranks of his party's leaders.

DeMint told the Greenville (S.C.) News that challenging Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is "not my plan," though he said he is open to seeking an "elected leadership position once 10 to 15 new conservatives — many of them supported by DeMint — join the ranks as he expects," the News wrote.

DeMint has previously balked at running for Senate GOP leader, but his openness to running for a lower post could raise eyebrows on Capitol Hill. ..."

What are the other elected leadership positions besides Leader and Whip? I'm drawing a blank....

Here are the current occupants of the positions:

It doesn't name the campaign committee chair there. I'm pretty sure that's Cornyn, unless the NRSC that he chairs is something different. Their list for that position stops at 2009 with John Ensign.

If maybe five or more of his endorsed candidates sweep into the Senate, it's entirely possible he could stage a successful coup and oust McConnell as leader.

Does DeMint have 15-20 allies in the Senate already? I'm just wondering how it would work.

It wouldn't need to be like that. If people see that DeMint holds the power to re-election more than McConnell (and in some cases, over him), that gives him a lot of leverage.

Yes, why do you think DeMint supported Rand?

I'm not sure about that. The vote is anonymous. So the senators won't be using their vote as ways to curry favor with the guy whose endorsement they want next time around. But all those establishment Republicans who don't want to see the party that got them where they are go through any major changes have incentive to vote for McConnell. I think Demint would need to help elect a lot more than 5-10 new allies for him to beat McConnell. On the other hand, if he has a noticeable minority of Senate Republicans, the establishment may well see it as in their interest to give him some lesser position.
