(CNN) - Five weeks before Colorado's primary, Republican Senate candidate Ken Buck has landed a helpful endorsement.

The conservative candidate announced Tuesday that he's won the backing of FreedomWorks, a nonprofit organization that helps train volunteer activists and has provided some of the organization behind the Tea Party movement.

Buck, the district attorney in Weld county in north-central Colorado, is facing off against former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton for Colorado's GOP Senate nomination.

"FreedomWorks PAC has a strong record of helping conservatives get elected," says Buck, in a statement. "I'm thrilled to have such a respected grassroots organization on our side."

"Ken Buck is the clear choice for true conservatives in this election," says FreedomWorks PAC Chairman Dick Armey, He has enough common sense to recognize that a nation cannot tax its way to growth, or spend its way to prosperity. There is a shortage of that kind of thinking in Washington right now."

Norton, who won the important endorsement of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce last week, has the backing of national Republicans, who view her as the strongest candidate this November. The Republicans are trying to recapture the seat now held by Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet, who was appointed early last year to replace Sen. Ken Salazar. Salazar stepped down to serve as Interior Secretary in the Obama Administration. Bennet is being challenged in the Democratic primary by former Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff.

Earlier this year Buck won the backing of conservative Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina. DeMint has used his political action committee, the Senate Conservatives Fund, to promote and raise money for other conservative Republicans in competitive primaries, moves that often put him at odds with national Republicans. DeMint is scheduled to campaign in Colorado with Buck on Thursday.

FreedomWorks says they'll help Buck with get out the vote efforts in Colorado over the next five weeks. The group helped in the campaign to defeat Republican Sen. Bob Bennett of Utah, who lost his bid for a fourth term in the Senate by GOP delegates at a state party convention. The group then backed Mike Lee, who ended up winning last month's Republican Senate primary in Utah. FreedomWorks has also endorsed Rand Paul in Kentucky and Marco Rubio in Florida.
