I don't think they're legal in the state of Georgia (not the cool ones, anyway). You can have sparklers and well, basically anything that's about as impressive as a lit match, unless they've changed the law recently. Yet, people still buy bottle rockets.

We have three on-duty deputies in a county with a population of about 25,000. So basically, no one ever gets in trouble for using cool fireworks unless their just being plain-stupid (like shooting them at each other, or at their neighbor's house, or something :p). I'm actually looking forward to the show tonight. There's a guy one street over who puts on one hell of a New Years show. Hopefully he celebrates the 4th as well.

There was a pretty good show last night. Why the 3rd, though? At like, 9:30pm? Anticipation must have gotten to them, lol.

Option 4: Fireworks are legal in my state, but that doesn't make my state a "free state". Just "free" when it comes to fireworks. :p

What is it we're supposed to be celebrating again?

It's illegal in Jersey, but the cops really don't do anything about it. They won't try to run you down for it, but they will ask you to 'stop' if you do it right in front of them. And once they leave, it'll typically resume.

I don't obey all laws, but I don't use fireworks here because I don't want to start a wild fire (which happens easily in the Sonoran desert). Poll needs more options.

Fireworks ordinances are usually set by cities and counties.

My option is better suited as "I live in a free unincorporated part of my county"

Legal Information

Consumer Fireworks are legal under Federal law for consumer use, therefore we can legally ship fireworks anywhere in the United States.

We currently ship to all but the following states:

AZ (will open in 2011), CA, DE, HI, MA, ME, NJ, NY, OR, RI, and Washington D.C

Consumer fireworks, also referred to as DOT 1.4G fireworks, are legal according to federal law. In order to be classified as "consumer fireworks", the fireworks must be tested by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and meet various requirements with regard to composition, the quantity of pyrotechnic material, and the stability of the product under heat and stress. Once the CPSC has classified an item as a "consumer fireworks", the item is legal under Federal law for consumer use. Fireworks that do not meet this certification are classified as commercial (display) fireworks and require a Federal license to purchase and use them.

US Fireworks sells only consumer fireworks that have been certified by the CPSC for consumer use. Because federal law applies to interstate commerce, we can legally ship fireworks anywhere in the United States. Unfortunately, State and local ordinances may ban certain fireworks if you do not posess a permit to own and store those fireworks. As a result, the responsibility for complying with State and local laws falls upon you (the buyer).

Where's the poll option: I oppose bans on fireworks, but I wish people would stop blowing up 1/4 sticks of dynamite in my neighborhood and setting off all the car alarms every 15 mins?

CPSC is the culprit for much of this. In general things with chlorates, perchlorates, picrates, and fine grade aluminum and magnesium are the ones that are banned.

I was annoyed to find out our local display happened yesterday. Apparently we haven't had a 4th celebration on a Sunday since 1948. There are 2 major reasons for this:

To not be disruptive to church services, as the parade route goes right in front of several churches and not compete with them for attendance.

and (surprise!) marching bands. 3 other communities stack parades back to back with us and the bands go from one to the other. The other 3 moved their 4th to the 3rd, so we followed suite. If we'd kept it on the 4th, several bands would not have attended. A number of them traveled from out of state.

I don't know if they are illegal or not. I don't buy them because I consider it a giant waste of money. If I want fireworks I'll just go to a fireworks showing in the evening.

It depends on the jurisdiction. In Missouri, fireworks stores the size of Walmarts sell them cheap year round.

I just finished lighting about $400 worth of fireworks off in my backyard in NJ. Atleast two dozen groups of people are lighting them off in a 1 mile radius here.

It's fun to see so many people break a bullshit law. The number of people lighting them off here is growing too, so it's basically unenforceable.

Fireworks are partially legal in Oregon. What's illegal are roman candles, M80's and firecrackers. However those items are readily obtainable across the river in Washington.

M80s are illegal on the federal level, which sucks, but you can make them yourself.

New York should be renamed Nanny York, no fireworks here, not even sparklers, can't wait to move out of this socialist cesspit.

That's one of the great things about America. We get to choose between a whole bunch of socialist cesspits!

Why are cities shooting fireworks when they're running deficits?

M80s are illegal on the federal level, which sucks, but you can make them yourself.

It's getting harder to make M80's. A lot of pyro chem suppliers limit how much of certain chems you can buy - like 1 pound a year. Also, if your order sounds like a M80 kit, they won't sell it to you. German black, clorate, perclorate, ... It's REALLY HARD to make fine grain metal pyro compounds!

Interesting thing about them is that less powder = louder bang - that's because of inadequate combustion and wasted fuel.

but yeah, they are banned everywhere.

When I was a kid, we used to buy them by the box (100 or 144 - don't remember) and send them flying over a lake with a wrist rocket. They are NOT appropriate to set off in residential neighborhoods! Few years ago a neighbors kid set of something clearly illegal and my roomie and I felt the shock wave inside (window was open) and fucked up our eardrums for a while too... LOUD! I was pissed!

A lot of cities canceled their fireworks displays. Really stupid. It's a minor expense compared to the rest of the budget, and adds a lot to community cohesion and quality of life in that community.

Should it matter how minor? if its being funded by money printing, then it shouldnt take place imo.

Most displays are funded by local taxes. Ours is funded by donations. I'm familiar with 2 federally funded displays - The Ft Meade show and the DC show. Meade tends to be more modest than other displays, but is good. DC is fairly spectacular, but the pre-show always totally sucks! As does the traffic and parking hassles/costs.
