We rented an apartment from March 2006-July 2009 which is when we bought our house. The IRS definition of a "first-time home buyer" is if you haven't owned your primary residence during the three years before your purchase date.

We have a (now) rental house in another state that we haven't lived in since March 2006. Both times our credit has been rejected is because they see that mortgage interest was paid in 2008. Duh! Of course we paid mortgage interest on our rental property! I know they sound like robots when you call, but maybe ACTUAL robots are handling tax returns!
