One smoker who wouldn't give his name said he bypasses the taxes by buying from bootleggers who peddle out-of-state cigs on city sidewalks for $6 per pack.

Smokers who did shell out the extra cash weren't happy about it.

"I couldn't believe it," said Robert O'Connell, 40, who paid $14.40 for a pack of Newports in Union Square.

The black (free) market will always step in when taxation becomes onerous. NY's tax revenues will probably drop after this.

Let's see now; they need the tax money to pay for the "Childrens" Health Care Program and other things while simultaneously driving the tax so high people stop smoking or buy on the black market.

So who's going to pick up the tab now?

Im just to the north of you and had been buying smokes online from a NY native reservation. Cartons for $16 delivered to my door...until the 1st of this month when it was deemed illegal by the Feds. Once these 18 cartons are gone I'll probably quit for good. I won't be demonized for being a smoker while also being taxed out the ass and paying for kid's health care at the same time.

As a smoker, even a light one at that (1-2 cigs a day), all I can say is I'm glad I don't live in statist New York.

Holy cow! Any smokers in NY? I'd be happy to help stimulate the free market and run up some used un-opened packs for ya.

Surely you don't mean this.

Wonder how long it'll take smokers to just grow and cure their own.

I hate tyrants who determine what sin is and what sin is not. Fuck them. Eventually we should kill them with bullets.
