The Center for Responsive POlitics reported that in the 1996 congressional race, only 19 of the 149 candidates who spent more than 100,000 of their own money won - that's less than 13 percent.
Similarly, in the 2002 midterm elections, 19 of the 20 U.S House and Senate candidates who spent 1 million or more of their own funds on their campaigns lost.
Of the 23 candidates who spent 1 million or more of their money in the 2004 cycle, only Michael McCaul (R-Texas) was elected.
In 2008, 49 congressional candidates spent more than 500,000 of thier own money, and just 6 House candidates and 1 Senate candidate won.
