I live on the gulf right outside of Tampa and started wondering about how things might be affected by the oil spill.
Has anyone heard of any affects the oil spill has had on the power companies that are on the gulf up in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and north Florida? A google map shows several on the gulf. I live about 20 miles from a power plant that's on the gulf. I'm not sure where they get their incoming water, but I know that they pour water into the gulf so I'm not sure if they also pull it in for cooling.
But there is a desalination plant in Tampa. It pumps seawater in from the gulf and turns it into drinking water for the community. That place will be useless if it's pulling in oil.
My water comes from wells, but I'm worried about the power. I could go solar but if the whole area loses power it won't matter because the gas stations won't have power, the grocery stores won't have power, it'd be a ghost town. And I guess the well pumps would also have no power...so no water either.
