47% of Oil is currently used for personal passenger Travel in the U.S. If this component alone in the chart below is modified, just think how long oil for other needs (such as 2% of farm use) would be available:

It takes only one gallon of gas to move one ton 436 miles via Train.

And Copenhagen has an even greener solution: :) :

I was hoping to see a shot of it raining to see if everybody was still smiling.

THe bigger problem would be snow. Up here walking during the winter is a fun sport much less navigating snowdrifts on a bike...

Makes sense in a nation about the size of one of our states not so much here.
Our oil spill problems would be solved if we would just start rendering down whales and dolphins again. Whales and dolphins keep the oil tied up in blubber and it doesn't mix with the water.

Also, did you notice that almost nobody was wearing a helmet. And I think some of them were youths. They must hate their children.

The city of Copenhagen is a very easy city to get around by walking or by bicycle.

Slightly off topic...

Copenhagen has special bike lanes and everyone respects that. Everyone, cars, bicyclists and pedestrians respect the traffic lights (they have special bike lane lights). Bikes also stay on the bike lane and passengers stay out of it. It works very well for them.

NYC has been trying to emulate this model in and around Manhattan by creating dedicated bike lanes. Unfortunately, a good number of bikers don't use it and ride in the middle of the street instead. NYC pedestrians, renowned for crossing against the lights, also walk in the bike lane. In Copenhagen, if you walk in the bike lane, they will hit you and no one will think twice about it.

Another big difference between the two cities is that NYC is more densely populated and most people are travelling to Manhattan which is difficult to get to by bike. You can't cross many bridges on bike and you can't bring them onto subways and trains during rush hour (not that you would want to lug them up and down stairs anyway). Plus, no one will steal your bike in Copenhagen -- you can leave it unlocked in most places. Doesn't happen here.

Does Passenger travel also include flights? I wonder how that mixes into the equation.

Screw that. Why shouldn't consumers be able to freely decide where resources go through their consumer voting dollars?

I look at cars being like guns as a safeguard for freedom. If the gvernment were to get out of hand, having a well armed, but also a highly mobile citizenry might be a problem for them.

Resources should be allowed to flow to their most highly valued end, without government intervention... if that means 70% for personal transportation, so be it. I don't want to ride a bicycle 20 miles a day each way to work here in Phoenix's 110 degree summers.

You just need one of these: :D
