Guess which state is #1, and guess what political candidate is associated with it.

Sweet! I'm surprised that TX didn't even make the list.

Rand looks cool in that pic.

Yeah, wth! Isn't TX like famous for totin guns? Before I moved here I thought everyone in TX had a gun and a truck.

It's based on background checks per 100,000 people. Perhaps Texans already have their guns.

Yeah, its pretty much a list of who bought the most guns since Obama was elected per capita.

The average Kentuckian bought 1.34 guns in the last 2 years. That's quite a feat.

Hmmmm, I'm in Texas, and bought 3 in that same period.

I am originally from KY, though. :)

I don't think it was because of Obama; in my case, I enjoyed martial arts for a while, but then wrecked my knee, and turned to gun-fu. :D

This is misleading, however.

As a percentage of the total population, there are more gun owners in Alaska.

Percentage of total population in Kentucky that have had background checks: ~ 3.11%

Percentage of total population in Alaska that have had background checks: ~ 3.19%

I'm an Alaskan :) Just had to point that out.

Besides that, I think if you counted the raw TOTAL amount of firearms in Alaska it'd be greater than the total amount in any other state by quite a bit, even though it is the lowest population state in the union!

Plus, we don't have any state firearms restrictions. People already have small arsenals in their homes. I don't know a SINGLE Alaskan family that doesn't at least have one handgun. My dad had an M1A1, M1 Carbine, SKS, M1 Garand, Walther PPK/S, and some cheap 12 guage when I was growing up, and I always remember how FEW guns he had compared to everyone we knew. Hell, our closest neighbor had about 20.

Surprising Texas is not #1. I own 10 myself. Although I did purchase half of them through private individuals. So those actually wouldn't be officially counted since we don't have a law here in TX for people to transfer registration of the firearm to the purchasor.

Doesn't surprise me about Texas. While I am sure that East Texas, West Texas, The Panhandle, and parts of Hillcountry, if taken as states in themselves would make it to that list, we do have to factor in a significant number of metropolitan areas that are absent from most of the other states listed. And gun ownership is significantly smaller in those areas.

Sincerely,

Slutter McGee

No, they had 1.34 background checks. As the article explained, Kentucky recently started doing MONTHLY background checks for concealed carry permit holders. So that's 12 per year. Eliminate all those monthly checks and Kentucky would probably be down below West Virginia.

Anyway, this is a ridiculous way to measure armedness. How about # of guns per household? From the FSP paper on Montana:
• Has exempted our citizens from the Federal Gun Free
School Zones Act, showing a will to defy the feds.
• Does not require a concealed carry permit in 99.6% of
the state. A gun in a backpack or a lady's purse is not
considered concealed, and needs no permit.
• Always allows a concealed weapon inside your vehicle.
• Where 95% of homes contain firearms, with 27 being
an average number of guns per household!

Wyoming is second behind Montana IIRC. Can't find any sources or stats other than Montana's. Of course, one cannot really measure these things entirely accurately -- who knows how many firearms lurk in any given home?

Or how about number of gun owners regardless of how many they own? http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/health/interactives/guns/ownership.html

Wow, that's crazy

1. Kentucky
NICS background checks per 100,000 residents 134,028

2. Utah
NICS background checks per 100,000 residents: 30,315

I'm not aware of any monthly background check here. In fact if you have a Concealed Carry License you don't even need to do a background check when you buy a gun. The idea was to cut back on the number of NICS checks submitted. I have bought many guns since 2008 and have not had to do a single background check.

Almost every single person I know here has at least a few guns, some far more than others.

There is 0% chance that Conway can win on an anti-gun message in KY.

I think this study (if you call it that) is skewed.

I do feel good that I have bought at least two since Obama has been elected. I would buy more, but ammo has gotten so damn expensive.

I need to pick up a concealed carry gun for my wife, and maybe another rifle for me in the next 12 months. I'm doing my part for Ohio.

Did you notice, for the most part at least, that the states with higher gun ownership you would feel safer in? I'll bet you there is more liberty in those states as well.

Texas is going to become a blue state in the near future. Too many big cities and illegals looking for handout.
