U.S. Rep. Ron Paul is optimistic about the future, but the Texas congressman also warned Iowa Republicans Friday night that they are in a struggle for the destiny of the nation.

"We are at a point where I believe we can lose our republic," Paul said.

Paul, an unabashed advocate of limited government and a two-time presidential candidate, spoke to an enthusiastic dinner crowd of about 320 people at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines at a celebration of the U.S. Constitution.

The event was a prelude to today's Iowa Republican Party convention, which is expected to draw up to 2,000 delegates.

Paul told the audience the Constitution has long been neglected and he recited a litany of troubles facing the government. But he said he is encouraged with the rapid ability of the Internet to spread information, and has been impressed by how many young people are grasping his message.

"Let me tell you, young people are very, very enthusiastic. They want to hear about personal liberty, sensible foreign policy, and free markets," he said.

The root of many problems is that the Constitution has long been neglected, Paul said.

"We don't do anything according to what the Constitution originally said," he said.
