The Chinese born after 1980 are among the most privileged generation in China's long history. Living after the communist government gave up the radical politics that tossed their parents and grandparents between chaos and penury, they have known only ever-rising levels of prosperity.

In their lifetimes, gleaming new office towers have remade China's cities. Hundreds of millions have been lifted from poverty. Travel abroad, private cars and apartments and a university education — all once the preserve of the elite — are increasingly common.

We need to pay our employees less in America to compete with tens of millions of educated Chinese engineers, technicians and inventors.

To save her $300 a month salary as a data entry clerk, Shang Meirong showers only once a week in the winter and three times a week in the summer in Tangjialing's communal bathhouse, which costs 70 cents per use.

"I don't sweat that much in the winter and it's not cheap, so we shower when we need to," says Shang, a petite 22-year-old from Cangzhou, a city two hours outside Beijing.

An "austerity" attitude in the U.S. is the best way out of our government debt crisis.

After taking a new job selling computer hardware in April, Liu's $30 share of the rent allows him to set aside much of his $400 salary for a nest egg that he hopes will help him start his own software company one day.

"I always ask myself if it's worth it," he says. "When I was in school, this isn't how I wanted life to be, but I chose this path so I can't look back."

America's youth are all about video games, movies and sloth.

China's youth are all about productivity and personal achievement.

If we don't wake up soon we will all be speaking mandarin!

I give up. I freely admit I cannot compete wit 50 cent an hour Chinese wages. I look forward to the day our government defaults on the national debt, the rest of the world cuts us off from trading with them, and we have to make consumer products once again on our own country.

think of what a chineese worker cannot physically perform without being here. those are the industries that might survive. i.e. you can be a buttwiper in a nursing home.

Elimate NAFTA, CAFTA, GAT, WTO, etc. Go back to bilateral trade agreements. Watch our country grow properly like you wouldn't believe.

Nevermind. We have the best representation a free people can elect and if we need to learn Chinese our representatives will take care of it.

unfortunately only solution is a protective tariff, which long term would be a disaster

Americans feel that they're entitled to a certain wage and a ton of other things. This entitlement mentality has been created by the welfare state and until that welfare state is removed, America will never be able to compete with China.

Um. I've been to Chinese factories. Management lives well. The workers live in concrete floored dorms, multiple army cots to a room, and traipse up and down the stairs in shifts as if it were a high school when the bell rings.

I'm not speaking to the minimum wage here, I'm just saying the people our minimum wage workers would be competing with are not in that room in suits, above.

They devalue their money and wealth rolls down hill. It isn't minimum wage alone, regardless.

I've been thinking about what would happen if there were "No regulation zones" in certain cities. There would be no minimum wage or labor laws, no taxes and no government intervention except in extreme cases (in case an employer beats a worker or forces them to work by locking the doors, if it ever got to that). They would be sectors of like 10 square miles of this pure no regulation land and businesses could do whatever they wanted. The city could sell it for a one time deal and that is that - the company owns it forever and the city makes money off of it. I mean, if unemployment is so high and there could be these areas where there is no minimum wage and no regulation, wouldn't companies flock to these areas and open up hundreds of low paying jobs?

Minimum wage seems sort of a non issue in competing with china or regaining any sort of control over our own destinies.

~ We ignore it when it suits us.

~ It has been dropping for decades.

The real problem is the stealth socialism that is sucking the value out of our savings and our currency. Not only has our government been spending in a run away fashion but with out any auditing of the worlds central banks who is to say just how much is being printed up out of thin air or where it is going and who is doing it.

I recently heard our Federal Reserve gave money to the International Monetary Fund to back the failed socialism in Greece. How much goes to support social programs here in our own country that amount to stealth socialism? Without an audit who can say?

This chart should give you an idea of the amount of fake money that is being printed that represents nothing of real value. If it did reflect the value of real assets we produce it would remain a flat line, I would think.

The little bumps during times of war were when we printed fake money. You can see that after they were over we regained some sort of control of ourselves.

When I started working Minimum wage was about $1.80. With the devaluation of the dollar it has steadily falling. I figure it would take over $20.00 an hour to equal the same value for your work.

No matter how much you earn, save for your future, hide or invest, the powers that be can get at it, and suck the life right out of it, no matter where it is.

P.S. My Mom told me when I was little that the main problem with socialism and why it failes is that if everyones gets an equal share of everything, "Why work hard?".

I think we have entered that phase without even knowing why or knowing that we have been a socialist country for decades.

It seems they are spreading the wealth and sucking the life out of our money faster then we can produce it.

instead, why not eliminate the most expensive and burdensome government on the planet to BIZ/workers/standard of living... Washington DC.

Chinese workers don't pay income taxes, and the ancillary 50% of other taxes like in the US.

The Fascist US government continues to be the threat to American workers and the cost of being uncompetitive. This government has cost American Jobs and businesses, you can't compete successfully when the FEDS are costing you or your businesses a major cut, which handicaps any advantages.
