A Republican Congressman says removing McChrystal from the command of US troops in Afghanistan reflects frustration over the failed Afghan war policy.

Republican Congressman Ron Paul of Texas says President Obama's firing of Gen. Stanley McChrystal indicates the deepening rift among the echelons of the US government over handling of the war in Afghanistan.

"They should have changed the policy and kept the general. Maybe that would have been better," Politico quoted Paul as saying on Thursday.

"But it's the policymakers that are at fault, not the generals; they tried to follow the orders but the policy behind it is at fault," he added.

McChrystal was sacked after he provoked fierce controversy with his scathing criticism of some Obama administration officials in an interview with the Rolling Stone magazine.

The general also indirectly criticized the US president, describing him as "uncomfortable and intimidated" with the US military brass.

Republicans have for the most part supported Obama's decision to replace McChrystal but they stick to McChrystal's war strategy, a counter-insurgency campaign that focused on driving out the Taliban and supporting the leadership of President Hamid Karzai.

He gets a lot of attention from them and the Russian press.
