While the American public is still 17 months away from the next presidential election, they have become highly intrigued with the showboating of potential candidates.

This election has the chance to drastically change the political landscape from its current imperialistic shadowed administration which (no matter what political side CNN or FOX tells viewers they fall on) will be a vast improvement.

Both sides are attempting to bring their candidates up front and show the most viable personalities to the public. While Democrats have their Clinton-Obama-Edwards race fairly locked up, on the Republican side, we have seen someone who could shake up their rankings and intrigue voters from all sides: Ron Paul.

While this may seem like a relatively new name for most readers, it shouldn't be, since he is a Texas congressman from the state's 14th district.

Now, I consider myself a fairly staunch liberal Democrat (whatever makes Ann Coulter's blood boil). Yet Paul has sparked up a passion for democracy and lack of government intervention that you would be hard pressed to find in the "Red" sea.

The man has character and lacks the buzzword from the last election, flip-flopping, that frontrunner McCain has had a difficult time evading.

During his last run as the "Straight-Talk Express" candidate, McCain was very forward with his supporters about what he stood for.

For example, in 1999, McCain spoke out to make Roe v. Wade irrelevant, but not to overturn the constitutionally protected right for abortion. In May of this year he came out as a supporter of repealing the groundbreaking court decision for women's rights.

While Paul is pro-life, he has never had to back track his opinions on the subject, which is a strong suit for any candidate.

Also worth noting: McCain, once a very avid denouncer of fanatical deceased Christian leader, Jerry Falwell, hired one of his Liberty University debate coaches, Brett O'Donnell. This was a last minute attempt for McCain to get back in the good graces of the Moral Majority and gain that pro-Christianity and pro-family vote.

While I don't agree with his stance, Paul has kept himself in the good graces of his voting base throughout his career, and has yet to backtrack.

While those are issues I disagree with on Paul's side, consider this, you left leaning folk out there: he wants to eliminate the Patriot Act, revamp our horrendous foreign policy, legalize medical marijuana, voted no on public school prayer during wartime or anytime and is probably one of the last few Goldwater Republicans.

For those who don't know, Barry Goldwater, before Reagan, helped revamp the Republican Party and lay the groundwork for the American public to trust in their party, leading to the landslides of Reagan and the 1966 House of Representatives Republican take over, gaining the party 47 seats.

While Reagan sided with the growing influence of the Christian Right, Goldwater stuck true to his Libertarian ideals and centrist, bipartisan leadership style to keep church out of government, the way it seems Paul is attempting to do with his campaign, at least to the best of his ability.

It's sad that a roundabout Republican, such as Paul, won't seemingly hold a chance in this country unless he bathes in crucifixes, but this is the life the right chooses to lead.

And for those on the left who are sick of their party not sticking to their guns, Ron Paul just might be the only ace choice on the right side of the spectrum.
