WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Tuesday unveiled an ambitious plan that aspires to end homelessness among some of society's most vulnerable groups within the next decade.

"Opening Doors," a "Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness," calls for ending child and family homelessness in 10 years while wiping out chronic homelessness and homelessness among veterans in five years.

According to the 74-page plan, "Stable housing is the foundation upon which people build their lives — absent a safe, decent, affordable place to live, it is next to impossible to achieve good health, positive educational outcomes or reach one's economic potential."

Buyer beware: Don't buy a place with undeveloped land around it, unless you or someone you know can buy it up and keep it from being developed.

The solution to Homelessness is to force people into homes. Those homes are going to need to be somewhere, folks.

they would sure have to build a lot of houses. even if they did give everyone a house they still would probably be very poor without a job, no healthcare, shitty schools, located in crime ridden neighborhoods, surrounded by drugs, on and on.

old lbj politics. this would surely destroy obamas approval even more.

they would likely be in cities and areas surrounding cities. just an estimate i would say you would safe more than 25 miles out any city with 100k or more people.

i don't think they would build a thousand houses on some farmland in the middle of kansas. you never know though.

The land is more plentiful in mid-sized cities.

This also jives with the moving Obama would have to do to get around some of the reasons the homeless are homeless to begin with. In Florida, for instance, a large number of homeless were created via child sex offender laws, which prohibit offenders from living within certain distances of certain places. This means many of them live under a bridge because it's the only place they can live. Those folks would need to be "housed" far, far away from schools, churches, and so on.

Public housing has always worked so well. We should absolutely do more of it.

All those crap mortgages they're holding? They can now foreclose, kick those people out, and then move in somebody else.

pretty much how i feel. f wells fargo!! i now feel good about it instead of feeling bad. the icing on the cake was when i had the 5200 to give to catch up with the bank and they refused it! at that point i realized they never wanted to work with us or my disabled wife! wells fargo is EVIL in corporate form!! the fact i can get a house 3 times the size of my own and hundreds of dollars cheaper is a good reason to walk away as well!! the line has been drawn in the sand! f them all!!

i will never trust insurance, banks or any corporation .they are all lying evil people in my eyes. i have to buy car insurance thanks to government black mail!! they can throw my ass in jail over corrupt health insurance all insurance companies and banks are the devil in my eyes, nothing will change that. i am doing everything i can to drop off the corporate world and the banking world and everything in between!! i want nothing to do with financial system ever again!

Overall, family homelessness was up 30 percent in 2009 from 2007.

Not good for the Big O.

Nationally, there are 234 community plans to end homelessness and 84 percent of them are 10-year plans, according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness

Wow, that is a lot of grandiouse dreams. I wonder how many have been successful...

Last year, the alliance identified four factors as crucial for plan success: putting a person or organization in charge of its implementation, setting specific numeric goals, setting a timeline for completion and identifying a funding source. In a survey of the first 90 communities to establish 10-year plans, however, the alliance found that only 8 percent of those plans had dedicated funding sources and only 18 percent had specific numeric goals. Only 41 percent set timelines for implementation and 35 percent had people or groups in charge of achieving the plans

That's what I thought, not much success.

The Obama proposal would direct 4,000 Section 8 housing vouchers to homeless people who need treatment from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration along with health care, child care and employment services from Medicaid and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

I'm sure the section 8 residents will welcome the homeless with mental problems and drug addiction problems with open arms.

The Obama proposal is modeled after similar efforts during the George W. Bush administration, which set a goal in 2002 to end chronic homelessness in 10 years.

Well that certainly worked. lol Nothing to see here folks.

Most homeless choose to be homeless. They don't stay in the shelters, because then they can't get drunk. They'll suck it up on a snowy night, but after that, they're back boozing it up.

That may be many of them, but just as many are there because they have serious mental problems. But the plan says they are gonna move all the drug addicts and schizos into section 8 housing, solved! :)

10 years is such a great number for such ambitious goals. You are guaranteed to be out of office for at least 2 years before people figure out you were a failure and even then you can blame the failure on your successor.

"You can't help those who simply will not be helped. One problem that we've had, even in the best of times, is people who are sleeping on the grates, the homeless who are homeless, you might say, by choice." -- President Reagan, 1/31/84, on Good Morning America, defending his administration against charges of callousness.

bwa hahahahaha....

I suppose that if the entire population of the US becomes homeless, then they can invent some new politically correct name for it that will create a positive impression.

Gordon Brown and NuLabour did this in our recent General Election by using the election slogan 'A Future Fair For All'

Well, if EVERYONE is destitute and ruined, then that's FAIR isn't it?

Welcome to the twisted mindset of Socialism

Obama is a Marxist, pure and simple. It's incredible that the corporate media managed to sell him to the American people so successfully. Don't underestimate the 'social engineers.' They can sell ice to eskimos. The majority of people out there are so incapable of thinking for themselves, they are cannon fodder.

I suspect the solution would be to pass a law requiring everybody to have their place of residence registered with the government. This way, when the police state checks on you and says "papers please" you must produce your electronically verifiable place of residence identification or you go to jail. Then, the jail becomes your place of residence.

Thread winner.

Obama won't be in charge in 2020. If he magically were, it would mean an incredible crisis so large that people won't remember this pledge. Since he won't be, he will blame whoever's in office at that time for not fulfilling his dream. It will make him potentially, temporarily, relevent again.
