Aerial photos of the oil slick

James Duncan Davidson, TED's conference photographer, is among a crew of five photographers and videographers reporting on the Gulf of Mexico for the TEDxOilSpill Expedition. His photos, taken aboard a plane above the Deepwater Horizon accident site, reveal the staggering extent of the oil slick.

Amazing photos. What is really going to be a mess is when the first hurricane or even a tropical storm passes through the area. The full effects of the leak are only beginning to be felt. They will get worse over time.

What happens if all of it is burned?

Global warming! Seriously though, might have local weather effects certainly in hurricane season you don't want to be heating the lower atmosphere. Plus it would take a long time, no way fish could come up to breathe, it's difficult for them now but impossible when it's burning. I don't know for sure, but don't think it would be a good idea.

Does anyone know how many barrels are in the field?

Dunno for sure, John, but I read somewhere that this well was drilled into a find that, when it was initially discovered, was said to be the "saudi arabia of the gulf" which, if true, means that ... it's a LOT of oil.
