There is any number of outraged blogs about lack of media coverage offshore and on some of the vessels working the GoM spill site.

Well, call your congressman and complain, because, as usual, most of it lies in government regulation.

A US flagged vessel must have a valid security plan and among other things, this plan must designate restricted and secure areas of the vessel which will include and living spaces, engineering spaces, galleys and mess areas.

Well, unless you hold a valid biometric TWIC card you are not allowed unescorted access to any restricted area on board.

And there is not enough people on board to provide 24/7 escorts.

Or you can go get onboard some of the multitudes of foreign flagged vessels out there whose personnel do not have to comply with TWIC mandates.

That made me cruise at 40,000ft and enter the state of confusion.
