A strange case developing in Arizona.

Light GA aircraft crashes into school just minutes after this Dean Martin fellow leaves.

EAGAR, Ariz. — A small plane nosedived into a high school in a small eastern Arizona town Friday afternoon and exploded, killing both people aboard, authorities said.

There were no reports of injuries on the ground. Classes are out for the summer at the school, authorities said.

The Cessna circled the area two or three times before it suddenly crashed into the main building at Round Valley High School in Eagar at about 2 p.m., Apache County sheriff's Sgt. Richard Guinn said.

Show Low Fire Department spokesman Eric Neitzel said two people aboard the plane were confirmed dead but their names and hometowns were not immediately available.

There was no immediate word on who owned the plane and where it was headed. But Neitzel said witnesses told authorities the Cessna took off from nearby Springerville Airport and experienced some sort of malfunction while it circled before veering into the school building.

Two hours after the crash, flames were still erupting 20 to 30 feet above the roof of the two-story school.

National Transportation Safety Board officials were expected at the crash scene Saturday morning to handle the investigation, according to Neitzel.

Fire crews from nearly a dozen small towns in the region raced to battle the flames. Officials evacuated homes in neighborhoods east and north of the school.

The school serves about 500 students in Eagar and nearby Springerville and is about 200 miles east of Phoenix. The blaze was contained to the main school building.

There was no indication that anyone was inside the school when the plane crashed.

State Treasurer Dean Martin, who was in Eagar, said he and others left their vehicles at the school before heading out on a forest tour. They drove off just minutes before the plane hit and looked in the rearview mirror to see smoke rising into the sky.

"Initially we thought someone tossed a cigarette butt," said Martin, a state gubernatorial candidate. "But shortly after, there was this massive fireball."

A Friday night event scheduled at the high school was moved to another building.

Then it turns out that Dean Martin is on the no fly list.

It also would appear that he is "one of us".

AZ State Treasurer deemed potential terrorist by Homeland Security
July 24, 12:29 PM
Daniel Heller

On July 16th, Arizona State Treasurer Dean Martin discovered he was on Department of Homeland Security’s “No-Fly” list when he was “pulled aside by agents from the Transportation Security Administration,” according to azfamily.com.
Martin was an outspoken critic of former Arizona Governor and current Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS). There’s no doubt Napolitano has some hard feelings for Martin. He was one of the first open critics of her state-wide photo radar cameras (calling them unconstitutional), initiated by a single signature of Napolitano’s dictatorial executive order. Back in January during a State Loan Commission meeting, he also gained some media attention when, as Chairman of the Arizona State Loan Commission, he attempted to warn Arizonans that the state would be facing a major budget crisis by March (which has come and gone) due to Napolitano’s reckless spending as governor. This meeting took place right before she flew off to Washington to pursue her life-long career as a socialist politician. Before she hopped on a plane and left our great state, Martin criticized her in front of TV cameras at the meeting, calling journalistic attention to how devastating her policies have been to the people of Arizona. In typical Democrat fashion, she had a fit. And stormed out of the meeting.
Now Martin’s on the “No-Fly” potential terrorist list. Democrats should be distancing themselves by Napolitano’s actions by screaming bloody outrage at such disgusting abuse of governmental power. (Imagine if John Ashcroft were still head of DHS and a local Democrat Treasurer were put on a potential terrorist “No-Fly” list. This would be front page national news for weeks, and hippies would be holding daily protests in Flagstaff.) Instead, they’re playing politics-as-usual because, it’s not that Democrats objected to the huge expansion of federal executive power by the Bush Administration, they just wanted that power for themselves. When Luis Heredia with the Arizona Democratic Party was asked to comment on Martin’s predicament, she said, “We’re asking the State Treasurer to focus on the problems we have in Arizona.” Not bad for not addressing the issue. But then, non-answers from thoughtless swamp creatures should be the expected norm. The distasteful hypocrisy of these people knows no bounds.
Arizona’s Channel 3TV News attempted to contact Napolitano and Department of Homeland Security for a comment on Martin’s status as a potential terrorist threat to this nation. The department responded: “Dean Martin is a common name.” Holy smokes! Watch out, dissidents, Obama critics and Americans with common names! Or you may find that you’re on Homeland Security’s “No-Fly” list, too.

Then it turns out that the pilot (and, apparently, his family was killed as well) is an ATF agent.

They were identified as Jeffrey, Ronna, Alexa and Carlie Ulrich. Federal records show the 1976 single-engine Piper was registered to Jeffrey Ulrich, of Wesley Chapel, Fla.

Apache County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Richard Guinn said the family left the Springerville airport on Friday and was headed to the Grand Canyon when the small plane nose-dived into Round Valley High School in Eagar and exploded. The two-story school was empty at the time.

Federal investigators have removed the wreckage of the plane and transported it to a facility in Phoenix where they are combing over the charred pieces, looking for clues into the cause of the crash. An investigation typically takes six months to a year.

Guinn described Jeffrey Ulrich, 50, as an experienced recreational pilot who worked as a special agent for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in the Tampa, Fla., field division. Bureau spokesman Scot Thomasson said Ulrich held that title since 1996.

Guinn said the family had arrived in Springerville from Wichita Falls, Texas, on Friday to refuel while on vacation. Jeffrey Ulrich was attempting to gain altitude when the plane struck a light post and a tree before it hit the roof of the school around 2 p.m., Guinn said.

Federal investigators said there was no evidence of a distress call. All major structural components of the plane were located.

A very odd confluence of events and people, I think.

That airport has a 7000' elevation. It was AZ in the afternoon in June. Being from Florida (sea level) he probably was careless about his load in that high density altitude environment. "Jeffrey Ulrich was attempting to gain altitude when the plane struck a light post and a tree..."

More than likely.

Still seems odd...
