The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium — are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe.

You know, a cranky old Jesuit trained guy that I know was telling me that if I looked on old and no longer published mineral maps, then I would see that Afghanistan is absolutely loaded with such things.

The government gets gold, opium and oil but what do the guys that did the fighting get?

“There is stunning potential here,” Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of the United States Central Command, said in an interview on Saturday.

Potential for who? Not us. It's not our stuff. We should keep our greedy little mitts off it.

Why do they even bother mentioning gold? I thought it was a useless relic.

Exactly!

American and Afghan officials agreed to discuss the mineral discoveries....

There's nothing to discuss.

It is useless to every single Keynesian Statist in the world. With the minor exception of Central Bankers of course :D.

I talked to a guy yesterday who just got back from Afghanistan, and he said there was no doubt in his mind that we are there because it is a mineral goldmine and whoever controls its resources competes with China and Russia.

Quite a nice coincidence that these countries they invade and take over happen to be so rich in natural resources. Who'd have thunkit?

Okay, so now we have a reason to be there. Take their gold and anything else we can find. I'd prefer they be honest about it. Better than the tired old lie 'we're doing it for humanitarian reasons.'
