I just don't understand how people can resort call him a plant. 100,000 PEOPLE actually voted for him. It doesn't matter WHY they voted because they VOTED. If voters were lazy enough to not even care who they vote for at the booth then that's their fault.. "You get what you pay for."

That's why I think this whole thing is hilarious.

But hey, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm not trying to be racist, but maybe he actually traveled to every ghetto in SC and had help from all of his family and friends to get 100,000 people to go out and vote for him. :D

Someone here should contact him and send him videos about the War on Drugs and the Federal Reserve. I mean, we have the chance to try and mold this guy into having views similar to ours.. If I can think of such a thing, I'm sure there are people with WORSE views and MORE power that are already trying to do that. So maybe we should start contacting this guy and getting him in line with our movement..

In particular, I like this:

Alvin Greene is not a corporate candidate selected by the Democratic Leadership Council. He is not beholden to the big-money donors that so many other candidates are. Alvin Greene is an ordinary Democrat from South Carolina, a man of the people, fighting for you!

and this:

I feel sorry for the guy.. The Dems released a statement saying they're not helping him at all. Sucks. Maybe he can get local help?

Also, I'm surprised the media hasn't tracked down anyone that voted for him and asked why they voted how they did. I still think it's possible not everyone that voted for him did so just because his name was the first on the ballot.

Folks voted for him because they knew his opponent and didn't like Rawl, so they chose the only other person on the ballot or left it blank. There were about 20,000 more votes for Dem Governor then there were for Dem Senator. Gotta assume those 20,000 didn't like Rawl but chose to leave it blank instead of voting for an unknown.

If Alvin is on the ballot in November, I'll be voting for him. DeMint can unseat Lindsey Graham when his seat rolls around again if he looses.

Aint that the truth. There were more than a few kneeslappers, particularly in the Olbermann interview.

Fwiw, I bet he was listed on the ballot as "Al Greene", not Alvin Greene. SC blacks know "Al Greene" very well. It's almost like the election plotline in the movie The Distinguished Gentleman.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_green

Albert Greene (born April 13, 1946),[1] better known as Al Green, is an American gospel and soul music singer. He reached the peak of his popularity in the 1970s, with hit singles such as "You Oughta Be With Me," "Spending My Time," "Love and Happiness", and "Let's Stay Together".[2] In 2005, Rolling Stone named him #65 in their list of the '100 Greatest Artists of All Time'. The nomination, written by Justin Timberlake, stated that "people are born to do certain things, and Al was born to make us smile."[3] The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Green in 1995, referring to him as "one of the most gifted purveyors of soul music." Green has sold more than 20 million records.

P.S. If this guy was a plant, then they need to fire the strategist who suggested him. How did that conversation go at GOP HQ?
"Hey, let's have a plant in the Democratic Primary."
"Great Idea!"
"Yeah, he can be an unemployed dude just recently discharged after 13-years of military experience. Better yet, he won't be able to form grammatically-correct sentences or sound even the remotest bit educated at all and he'll be up on sex-offender charges."

So I just read that the FEC is launching a formal investigation into Mr. Greene's candidacy now.

They don't bother to look into anything except someone who "isn't supposed to win" actually being nominated. McCain and Fred Thompson both flaunted the rules during the 2008 campaign and nary a word from the FEC. A black guy from SC wins the Dem nomination without pouring millions into the race and suddenly it's a federal case.

Yes, it sounds like the democrat party in SC is filled with racists. Are they suggesting that an african american veteran can't possible win the nomination of the party without the help of rich white republicans?

On another note, this will make the second senate race in a row where the SC Democrat party has vocally objected to their own party's candidate. I guess they are content with just their 1 democrat senator from south carolina (http://static.open.salon.com/files/1093948877_37321220576995.jpg).

Background

After graduating from Manning High School in 1995, Greene received a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of South Carolina in 2000.[5][6] He served as an intelligence specialist and a unit supply specialist in the U.S. Army[7] and has served in the Air Force and Army national guards. He has received the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, the Korea Defense Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Greene received an honorable but involuntary discharge from the Army in 2009 and has been unemployed since.[7]

You think someone behind Greene is banking on a member of the democratic party to buy them out? Rawls raised a quarter of a million dollars and probably would be willing to make an under-the-table deal, so Greene could simply abstain.

Political positions

Greene describes himself as a "moderate Democrat." He favors measures to lower the price of gas and supports offshore drilling. He supports a united Korea under a democratic system of government.[9] He would let the Bush tax cuts expire and supports reform of the financial industry. Greene supports job creation and would increase highway construction projects and pursue alternative energy sources. He has also called for better school facilities and pay raises for teachers. When asked about free trade, Greene has stated that he has to look into the issue further before taking a position. On the subject of firearms, Greene said he supports the Constitution.[6]

The Governors race was not a sure thing tho, not enough to convince 40,000 republicans to vote for Greene.

Rawl lost because people knew him and did not like him so they picked the other guy. There was no republican conspiricy to notify 40,000 people to vote in the dem primary, otherwise Ford would have got the Dem Gov nod...

The first explanation was that no one knew either candidate, and Greene was picked because he was first on the ballot. I'm not in South Carolina, so I don't know what actually happened on the ground there. A few things though that I suspect.

1) The South Carolina Democratic Party is not powerful, and Dems aren't popular there.

2) The Democratic Party knows they're going to lose to DeMint, so no one serious wanted to run knowing they'd lose.

3) I don't know who his opponent was, but it's possible that he's fairly well known and unpopular.

4) No Polls were taken on this race.

5) Turnout was extremely low.

6) There was very little press attention to the race. The Media "knew" that the opponent would win.

7) The Nikki Haley race was high profile, so I would think that Republicans would've have sat that race out in order to sabotage the Democrat race.

8) It is possible that this Greene guy did some campaigning.

**************
adding
*************

9) Was this an open primary? Were people able to vote for Nikki Haley on the R side for Governor and then turn around and vote in the Dem
Senate race? If it was for the lulz, then any outcome was possible.

10) Rawl's favorability rating, as measured by a poll 2 weeks before the election, was 4%. I think he was as unknown, or almost so, as Greene.

11) Race did not play a large factor. Greene did outperform Rawl in majority black districts, but not by anywhere near as much as one might think.

think this is the year of the upset and none of the old rules actually apply. someone had got
the troops out on election day as the auld judge found out. i think demint has to run cautiously!

keep in mind that mitch mcconnell was giving trey grayson pointers each step of the way
and even now, trey grayson thought his internal polls to be highly accurate as rand paul
more than edged WAY past him. if the auld judge had a similar polling outfit though less
expensive than someone mitch mcconnell could bourbon aristocracy afford, then we must
ask WHY a candidate who would have won in any other year over the past thirty has lost
quite thoroughly in THIS GREAT RECESSION YEAR! folks are being classic populists...i opine!

While people here are espousing conspiracy theories, I will suggest one. Given that DeMint-supported candidates (Paul, Angle, Rubio, Toomey, Lee, etc.) have won many primaries, Mitch McConnell may be worried about his security as Party Leader after 2010. Thus, it is possible that he or the NRSC planted this guy so they could frame it on DeMint and give his wing bad publicity.

either sen. mcconnell has set up a strawman for jim demint to trounce come november,
or he has set up a test for jim demint that demands ALL of his I.Q points most totally!!!
there was talk of JACK HUNTER leaping in to take on LINDSEY GRAHAM and if senator mitch
sees Mr. Hunter as being a rEVOLUTIOn person, maybe he wants to keep lindsey from
ending up like mr. bennett recently did. a game-changer upsets ALL the rules, and this
i think includes everything assumed about S.C since reconstruction! i still think an intense
word of mouth unseated the auld 60something judge for a guy half his age to roar out of
noooooooooooo~where to take him on totally and WIN! demint was about to challenge
the minority leader. if jim demint LOOSES to alvin greene, what will our PBS pundits say?
most likely Jack Hunter will rally the TEA PARTY people and some TEA PARTY EXPRESS people
to jim demint's cause. we may see the local S.C g.o.p unify. the DNC has set up a S.C slam site.

keep in mind mitch mcconnell had backed henry cabot lodge jr. in 1964...
keep in mind mitch mcconnell did not back barry goldwater sr. in 1964...
keep in mind mitch mcconnell has been playing an astute game in D.C...

actually, i imagine greene would do rather well if only because it will be free time for him.
