The latest PPP survey on hypothetical 2012 match-ups shows President Obama leading the field of Republican hopefuls. But not so among independent voters:

One thing that's very interesting about these numbers is that Ron Paul is the most popular out of the whole group with independents. They see him favorably by a 35/25 margin.

Ron should run GOP to get in the debates, and then split and go independent before the primaries start.

With Rand in senate as GOP do you really see Ron running independent?

I have the poll itself posted in a different thread.

Rasmussen had Ron only 1% away from Obama, but whether the DEm polls are wrong or Rasmussen is wrong, Rasmussen does poll GOP better than Dem polls do.

Why do you want him to lose?

Well, if Ron can win Iowa (a decent shot atm) and New Hampshire (less of a shot)
or come in second (definitely plausible) in both states then it wouldn't be worth it.

BUT, if we know he is going to lose the Republican nomination the wise thing for the aging Dr. Paul would be to run as an independent, or even Libertarian, for President. If he dropped out before the CP and LP national conventions, I think he would have a great shot of getting into the debates with the name recognition he has now and the nominations of both 3rd parties.

The only other White House hopeful on positive ground with them is Romney at a +2 spread and they're very negative on the rest: -5 for Huckabee, -16 for Gingrich and Palin, and -17 for Obama. All five of the possible GOP contenders lead Obama with independents, but Paul does so by the widest margin at 46-28.
More here.

you left out the big item, imo.
