Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson spent his early years in Alabama with his grandparents, plantation workers on the same plantation that their forefathers toiled on as slaves. He still remembers the “whites only” and “coloreds only” signs that separated the races back then. And at a young age, his parents split up and moved away. But he isn’t angry anymore.
Instead of hating whites or America for the circumstances he was born into, Rev. Peterson wants to “unite the races” and “stand up for the greatest country in the world,” he told JBS.org in a telephone interview. “Not one time did I hear my grandparents telling us that we should hate white Americans. They said ‘treat people the way you’d like to be treated, work hard, and you can make it in this country.’”
When Rev. Peterson moved to Los Angeles at 18, the “godless so-called leaders” convinced him that white Americans were holding blacks back. “I gave into that anger too, and it nearly destroyed me,” he recalled. But then, he started to question things. “I realized that if white Americans were holding us back because we’re black, why is it that the so-called leaders are doing very well? Why wasn’t the white man holding them back? And that’s when I realized that we had been lied to.”
With that realization, he explained, God caused him to overcome his anger and forgive his parents. “When I forgave them, God forgave me and gave me perfect peace. That’s when I realized that black Americans are deliberately being kept down by the people that they trust the most,” he said. And after that awakening, the rest, as they say, is history.
Rev. Peterson founded the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny (http://www.bondinfo.org/) (BOND) in 1990 with the purpose of, as its motto states: "Rebuilding the Family By Rebuilding the Man." He currently serves as its president. The non-profit provides counseling, after-school character building programs, a home for boys, and many other services. More recently, Rev. Peterson formed BOND Action (http://www.bondaction.org/), a lobbying organization which exists to “educate, motivate, and rally Americans to greater involvement in the moral, cultural and political issues that threaten our great country.”
For five years, the BOND Action Committee held a national day of repudiation of Jesse Jackson, organizing a big rally outside Jackson’s office on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. “We wanted to show the contrast between Dr. King’s dream and Jesse Jackson’s nightmare,” explained Rev. Peterson. “Dr. King said that one day we would be judged by the content of our character and not color, but Jackson’s thing is that he took a dream and turned it into a nightmare, and now, black Americans are into color instead of character.”
He told JBS.org about some of the people BOND has helped go on to Ivy League universities, successful careers and good lives. “We have a lot of success stories,” he explained, adding that many of the young people he has worked with would be presented at the organization’s 20-year anniversary celebration in October. “When you show them how to work hard, to be responsible, to judge people based on character, not color, stop hating their fathers and mothers for being out of order, there’s nothing in this country that can stop them, and BOND has proven that to be so.”
He also emphasized that all of the work is funded by private donors. “We’ve done all of this without one dime from the government,” he said. “The less government in your life, the better off you are, and I’ve realized that the government is what set black Americans up to lose their sense of self-control.” He’s proud of the fact that he has never asked government to help.
BOND’s most important goal, according to Rev. Peterson, is turning men back toward God and rebuilding the family. Another aim is to help young people get a good education — Rev. Peterson even wants to start a BOND Academy for Boys to house and educate young men and help them understand American history, all while learning the necessary skills to create a stable foundation for life. He also wants to unite the races. “It doesn’t make sense that in 2010, blacks and whites are still divided,” he said, adding that he is not “African American,” but rather an American.
In addition to his work as President of both groups, Rev. Peterson holds Sunday services, hosts a nationally syndicated radio show Monday through Friday, and appears regularly on TV channels from FOX (http://video.foxbusiness.com/v/4199991/immigration-law-not-about-race-or-racism) to CNN and MSNBC. He has also written two books: ‘SCAM: How the Black Leadership Exploits Black America (http://www.amazon.com/Scam-Black-Leadership-Exploits-America/dp/0785263314),’ and ‘From Rage to Responsibility (http://www.amazon.com/Rage-Responsibility-Conservative-Peterson-America/dp/1557787883).’
He recently made headlines (http://www.scpr.org/news/2010/06/01/la-county-boycott-arizona-over-immigration-law/) after being escorted out of a Los Angeles County hearing for loudly denouncing the county’s move to boycott Arizona over its immigration law. “I didn’t get arrested, but believe me, I was willing to. Somebody has to stand up for what is right,” he said.
The NAACP, Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan, Al Sharpton and others “are deliberately using black Americans in order to gain power and wealth,” explained Rev. Peterson. “They keep them angry by telling them that it isn’t their fault, it’s the white man’s fault.” But it isn’t the “white man’s” fault, he insists — it‘s the government’s.
“About 50 years ago, the government came in under Lyndon Johnson and said to black people: ‘We’re going to help you, we’re going to take care of you — racism is holding you back, and the government is going to help you — but you can’t have a father in the home,” and that’s where the trouble came in, he said. “Black Americans said OK to that, and they took the fathers out, and the government became the Daddy of the family.”
Rev. Peterson said Democrats, in particular, were keeping blacks on the “plantation of the Democratic Party in order to use them. All they do is tell black people ‘if you vote for us we’ll throw you a program,’ and black people — not all but most — fall for that. So we want to educate black Americans about that.” He also wants all Americans to stop being scared about educating their fellow citizens and “stand up for the truth.”
On top of all that, Rev. Peterson is undertaking a nationwide speaking tour to expose President Barack Obama and stop his socialist agenda. “I never imagined that one day we would have a President who’s against the country, who’s a racist, who’s a socialist,” he said. But even though Rev. Peterson is fiercely opposed to Obama’s presidency, redistribution of wealth, and the current policies in general, there is a bright side to all of it. “The one good thing that’s coming out of this is that he has awakened the people — the good Americans of this country,” he said.
After speaking at Tea Party rallies around the country, he said it was clear that Tea Partiers were the “good folks” of America. “For these people to be called racists is nothing less than evil,” he explained. “When I meet the folks who are standing up and waking up, I feel good in that I think a change is going to come — I think we still have another chance to save America, and so I feel really good about that. I have hope.”
To save the nation, Americans need to stand up and fight for family, country, Constitution, and to put God back in the public square, Rev. Peterson concluded. “Our battle is a spiritual battle — a battle between right and wrong, good and evil,” he said. “The folks who are on the side of good — never mind the color — need to come together and start working against evil.”
