The Japanese really really hate whales. After all, it was whales who dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. :D

I also noticed that the media and government went into an anti-Toyota hysteria when it looked like the Japanese were going to kick the bases out.

The Toyota witch hunt suddenly stopped, and the media is now back to positive stories about Japanese cars. Right after the Japanese agreed to keep the bases, the Wall Street Journal came out with a story about stuck gas pedals in Fords.

Dolphins are their mortal enemy as well.

I see danger in lifting the whaling ban in that the sea is considered "commonly owned." Since private property rights are disallowed in whales this could easily lead to a tragedy-of-the-commons situation, which would, of course, vindicate environmentalists' trust in state regulation, in their own minds. This sort of double-edged sword in not uncommon with "deregulation." Better to allow people to own the whales first, and then allow them to hunt them.
