All eyes this week are on this Friday's jobs report.

The market is expecting 500K jobs created, and an unemployment rate of 9.8%.

But while you're waiting for that, here's a quick survey of what the US employment situation really looks like, across various measures and industries.

While the economy added jobs last month, prospects for the long-term unemployed are looking increasingly grim.

The average length of time that the typical jobless worker has been out of work reached yet another record high, of 34.4 weeks, in May:

And why should they go back to to work, the government keeps giving them free money for not working.

I am out of work. The government isn't giving me anything. I got unemployment for almost 2 months after 12 years of constant employment.

Because I am not receiving unemployment, I am not "unemployed", so I don't show up in the statistics. Only people getting unemployment or welfare show up as "unemployed" so you know the term "unemployed" has become too loaded.

% of people without a job is at least double what "unemployment" is.

Eville(tm) parasite!

I've been out 2+ years and have never collected a day's unemployment benefits. Nobody is giving me a dime.

what is this "savings" thing you speak of...

Due to the moral hazard created by mandatory unemployment insurance payed for by the employer, employees do not properly protect themselves for periods of unemployment.

I have always worked low wage jobs when I worked I was able to cover my bills. I had thought about moving to a less expensive place so that I could save but, I would have had to move to the ghetto in order to find cheaper housing than I alread have.

I used to work several jobs some paid a little more than others. I also had a professional license but it just pissed me off to the inth degree the way I was always having to pay more and more fees and continuing ed to be legal and charge less and less for my services because of competition.
