We often talk about the collapse of the U.S. economy.

But this may all start in CA.

There are no solutions to stop a California collapse. The government has proven to be ass retarded, and has blown all of the money. The economy isn't exactly getting better, so I'm guessing the genius's in Sacramento's next move will be to ask Father Obama for a bailout.

But the U.S. government is completely broke and living on borrowed money and time. They may crank up the printing presses once again, but this will further add to inflation, and actually hurt CA and everywhere else.

So down we go.

What will happen?

Who knows. One interesting thought is that, if there are any riots or civil unrest, you have to wonder what the cops will do. Will they still work for the State when it is clear that the State is not going to be giving them paychecks worth a damn? What incentive do the cops have to do the State's dirty work if they are getting paid in IOU's or perhaps worthless fiat currency?

CA will be an interesting place to be in the coming years. I for one can't wait to be here when it all implodes.

all good stuff but: most cops don't do it for the pay. a few altruists doing their duty for the public good exist, but most are on a power trip. In a gov't collapse that part can only get worse, as they will have free reign, a badge, a gun, and no real chain of command to report to. They will probably go around extorting food and barter goods from people and sellers for "protection"

Thank you Gunny. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for the qualifier "a few altruistis doing their duty for the public good exist." The militarization of police is a problem. Police are increasingly about violence or cash flow. I agree with everything you said. I just get so tired of "fuck the police because I love Rage Against the Machine and socialism...but not really" bullshit, that a qualifier is nice to hear. And you will get money from my coffers fine sir. Sometime soon. Once I have saved up enough money for this ridiculously expensive bullshit engagement ring.

If you want a glimpse into the future of California, take a trip to Tijuana.

Police salaries have risen from 600 bucks a month to about 1,200 over the last few years, and all of the main roads are now free of potholes after being repaved with top-notch concrete. Parts of California just might end up worse than Tijuana, and some LA ghettos are already there.

i don't think swarzenegger would ask obama for a bailout, and the next governor which could possibly be meg whitman(given that she is spending tens of millions of dollars to win this race) would not ask either. Since Whitman will be the nominee for repub gov, I have a feeling that she will not go down the path of spending and instead cut a lot of stuff. If she spends she will be another swarzenegger and the conservatives will hate her. If she cuts spending and freezes government which is what needs to happen she will restore the quite large but sleeping conservative base in california. However, this is only if she actually can win.

Living in California now for two years I have come to some conclusions about the state. The state is absolutely doomed in the coming years and I don't know if anyone can fix it. The government is so entwined in the economy and peoples lives and livelihood that any cutting of government will affect the people for the worse. The government is like a drug in the body and if it doesn't get its fix the body will fail.

How much of the Federal Tax revenues come out of California????

If California seceded from the US they would be fine.

Sure as hell wouldn't want to be in a place like Los Angeles where I live right now if the SHTF(The 1992 riots is a good example). Been thinking of moving to a rural area in Brazoria County, Texas.

Somehow there will be money for police/law enforcement. Violent criminals will be given a pass (they are victims, too), but political miscreants get targeted. That is liberalism for you.

I plan on leaving California, probably to either New Hampshire, or a different country. I'm just busy getting my education right now.

I must say, I have no expectation of California collapsing. California will get progressively worse, and guess what, America will foot the bill.

California is not getting worse in some obscure abominable way, it is going in the exact direction the people of this country want it to. They want America to follow.

Sure they say they don't want a broken budget, but when it comes time to paying the bills, they are like junkies, they spend it all on their wants, and hope for handouts for their needs.

America will support California, maybe even help California become even worse, with the definitive tactic of "tit for tat" that Obama is employing to doubly destroy everything he touches ( Remember the federal government bribed states to pay for their highways if they raised the drinking age to 21?).

Example: "I'll bail you out, but Americans expect something for it, so the government will force you to do a laundry list of things that will eventually bankrupt you anyway". -Obama on everything he's ever bailed out.

Here is how it will go:

"We Americans will save the once great state of California, but in return, they'll have to make sure 100% of all people are fed and cared for, all corporations will have 100% income tax, all incomes over $50,000 will be 100% as well. We will nationalize all parks, all power, all education, and all transportation. Cars will be illegal....."

Then, when California has become a compounded financial nightmare, and pure socialist minded police state, and America has dumped billions into the state to further destroy it, America will follow suit, one by one, until the entire nation is purely federalized with an absolute removal of all rights or individual enterprise. Then the nation will eat itself from the inside and become a third world country. Its money will finally collapse, long after its infrastructure is gutted. The nation will purr on as a totalitarian regime, only able to maintain order with the overhead from minimal output of resources by a collective. It is enough, as it has been enough for most nations throughout human history, but enterprise, free will, individuality, free expression, innovation, will all be dead, and America will just hum along like a thousand forgotten nations of millions who never mattered, who never acted, who never really lived.

NY will be the first to fail. they are hugely dependent of Wall Street, so one more crash and the deficit soars. real estate in NYC is very over valued, and must also fall by at least 50%

I read in the local paper that for every $1 sent out to the feds California gets .74 back.

If anything i see the state selling everything it owns to the fed to keep afloat for the next 3-5 years. State parks will just be turned over to Fed for cash.

delusional!

If California seceded, they would be the instant enemy of millions of people loyal to the states. They would not have a reserve currency, would be deeply in debt, and would have to provide for their own defense for the first time in for ever.

And good luck obtaining water and energy after seceding too.

Those stats are extremely misleading.

we all know fiat currency creates a hidden tax. It also creates hidden revenue streams - and not all states benefit equally.

Think about it. We print trillions of dollars putting our economy on steroids. Much of this money goes into economies in California, Florida, etc, making them apear to have a much higher revenue then they would have otherwise

And none of this takes into account that wealthy residents would certainly flee a state if it seceded from the Union.

On the other hand, they'll lose their "legitimacy", and so a great deal of support. They'll also lose their backup. Defend yourself against a cop today, and the whole world comes down on you. Not so in this circumstance. To go around stealing from people in this case would be to take your life into your hands -- same as for a common criminal.

Yes, the qualifier is absolutely warranted. I personally know of a handful of cases of good cops, and I'm sure there are many I don't know about.

Why? It would seem to me that it would depend on the reason for the secession. If the state intends to have low taxes and free markets, I don't know why they wouldn't stay.

a wealthy person is not going to trust his wealth to an upstart country.

If he would, then there are plenty of places he could apply for citizenship right now that have lower taxes and more free markets.

I suppose that's possible.

They could also operate in the state while keeping some wealth elsewhere.

And, once the state establishes a reputation for stability, I'm sure it would attract huge amount of resources from near socialist states.

Agreed. Many of the cops will become by far the most dangerous sociopaths imaginable, as if that were not already the case... only far worse. "We" will have hard choices to make - cave, or start killing them until they get clear in their minds that we are not to be messed with.

I see very dark things ahead for us in the coming 2 years... give or take. I am beginning to feel that physical fighting is the only hope we have and even then we are a slim-odds bet. More than ever I recommend you start stocking up on food for the long term.

Fifty percent? HA! How about 95+%?

My friend's parents bought a place on W. 13th street in 1981 for $180K - an outrageous sum at that time. About 3 years ago they sold it for nearly $5 million. Utterly absurd.
